[TITLE] Activity of JVC in South Africa
I sometimes watched a TV program about the discrimination against black people, the poverty and AIDS. But I always thought about these when I saw the program. Listening to today's speech I thought that those problems are continuing now. I hope those problems will disappear.

Thank you for today's speech.

I feel there are discriminations and prejudices about races, sexuality and scholastic ability. And I think a lot of Japanese regard people in Europe and America as higher than us and Chinese and Korean as lower than us because of the notion of wars. It is difficult to change the notion soon, but to do so, we have to understand each other. I think Natural Farming is a very nice idea because nowadays we have problems of environment and want of food. So I hope that Natural Farming will spread out to other countries.

[TITLE] The Impression of Today’s Lecture
I have little knowledge about apartheid, much less about the present South Africa. Although the policy of apartheid was abolished, I think that there are some segregations against blacks. We ought not to regard blacks as unskilled, inferior race to white. Furthermore, we have to provide blacks with educational supports and necessities.

As for AIDS problem, I have never considered this disease, because I do not think AIDS is NOT common in Japan. Maybe we might be apt to discriminate against people who suffer from AIDS. However, the idea of PLWHA is really important. I was amazed at this because we do not have this sense or idea. Japan should adopt this principle.

I was thinking about what I can do for needy people in developing countries including South Africa. The thing that I noticed is that the important thing is to have not a sympathy but an empathy with these people. Helping others does not always mean giving food and money. I think that the point is to know the needs of these people and work with them. Ms. Tsuyama and Ms. Watanabe are role models who are realizing these ideas

I saw the word "Red Ribbon" recently. It is the activity to think about HIV and AIDS. But I didn't pay attention to the activity. I thought AIDS is not related to me. After I heard today's lecture, I thought that I must think about AIDS more seriously because Japanese may also be infected with AIDS.

"I'm filled with healthy body and energy." This sentence in a poem impressed me. I thought Christina has a very strong mind.

I was very impressed with the origin of her children's names. The children are really a gift from freedom. I think JVC is a very wonderful organization because I can understand that they really take care of South African people. She said JVC is just a foreigner for South Africa because they leave will there in the future. So, JVC changed the way to help them to make African people live their life by themselves. I think the change is really helpful.

Today I recognized that there are some discriminations not only in Africa but also all over the world. She said that even though her skills were limited, she tried to do her best for African people. So I should try to do my best to make the discrimination disappear.

I was surprised that South Africa has eleven official languages. How many people can speak all the official languages? And I want to know the average number of the languages South African people usually speak

I think providing a chance to learn, not goods, is a very thoughtful action. Local people may want to get goods, but it is not a solution. I thought guide to independence is a real solution.

Discrimination against blacks, especially in voting, is contrary to the principle of majority decision. I think it was a very unfair thing.

Today's lecture was a very important and difficult issue. Many things were new and unfamiliar to me. I was interested in volunteer work before but unfortunately I stopped learning about it. But today I remember the activities I have done and I thought I would like to do anything for other people again. I thought it's important to provide the chance to learn for poor people.

The consciousness that Japanese are surly outsiders in South Africa must be of help for the refugees without fail!

I hope the good connection between Japan and South Africa lasts long.

South Africa was an unfamiliar country to me, seen only on TV or in textbooks, but from this lecture, I felt South Africa was a bit closer. I also realized how lucky I am because I grew up without HIV and/or strong-discrimination.

I really liked the idea of "peer work," and I really hope they develop their country using their rich culture, also decrease PLWHA. I felt that I need to learn more with a broader view so that I can think about and work for others.

Today's lecture was very interesting for me because I'm very interested in NGOs and South Africa. I think Apartheid is a cruel system and I'm glad it is abolished. But especially because of the difference in the rate of black 90% and white 10%, I was wondering why the opposite discrimination didn't occur after 1994. Bt Ms. Tsuyama's words which Mr. Nelson Mandela said "We cannot forget the past but we can forgive" gave me a big hint to my question and a idea of the country, South Aftica.

The discrimination against black people is really hard to dissolve. However, as Ms. Tsuyama said, it is important "not to forget but forgive the past." I know that the past experience of black people was so cruel, dominated by the white people. But I hope someday there will be no discrimination so that everybody in the whole world would be able to live happily.

[TITLE] Discrimination
I know discrimination is bad. However, when I heard that Japanese were classified as "colored," I felt uncomfortable because I could be discriminated due to my skin color. And then, when I heard that Japanese were now considered as honorary "white," I felt relieved. I'm ashamed of feeling this way.

I think it is partly because of advanced nations such as Japan that poor countries are suffering from hunger and so on. Japanese are considered as "white" because they have a lot of money. I'm really ashamed of being an honorary "white" when I think of what I sacrifice.

I thank Ms. Watanabe and Ms. Tsuyama very much for the lecture. It was very nice to know many things about issues all over the world. I have joined volunteer work for children in Mexico and Ecuador once, but actually all they needed was money. I was sad because I wanted to support them by giving something more than money or materials. I want to keep it in my mind that imagination about other people is a very important thing!

Supporting African people is difficult for me. I need much more skills, knowledge and courage. But I think there is one thing I can do for them: which is, to sympathize with them. I lost my family last year, so I can understand the feelings of orphans and vulnerable children. I thought that I might be able to support them. If I can go to Africa, I'd like to help them.

[TITLE] NGO in South Africa
Since I've worked for JICA, I know a little about working with people in developing countries and how difficult and demanding it is. As Ms. Tsuyama said, it is important to communicate with them. I think that, before introducing any skills that we have, we should gain good communication skills so we can establish good relationships with people.

I'm interested in working in developing countries again. However, I have no skill to pass on. I'll look for something that I can do for people in those countries. Furthermore, the poem by Christina was so touching; the message was very clear, but very deep too.
