[TITLE] Are Cultures unified or lived together?
Globalization is a process by which people of the world are unified into a single society (culture). I can't agree with its definition perfectly. I thought that globalization is a process by which people (cultures) of the world coexist.

[TITLE] Models for Cultural Modernity
He was very polite and his presentation was very interesting. I enjoyed it so much.

The content is difficult for me but I thought his idea was profound. I'm thinking that I want to go to Canada to study. Before then, I should learn about culture deeply.

[TITLE] Nationality
Just like in Canada, British people don't care which country you came from either. I think Japanese people should be like that because Japanese people, especially businessmen, are not friendly to foreign people. I think Japan needs more nice people who come from other countries in the near future.

[TITLE] Challenges for the Future
Language has a power to shape what people think. From a viewpoint of cultural diversity, it's not good that English dominates all over the world. However, there are good points. People can understand each other easily because their idea is created by the words of English. It will lead to reduce conflicts between people from different nations.

At the end of this lecture, Scott talked about Canada. I was very interested in it because I'm going to live in Canada for a year this spring. In Japan, people see foreigners with curiosity. However, he said, "Canadians don't mind if people are foreigners or not." When I live in Canada, I will be a foreigner, but I don't have to care. I think it is difference in culture between Japan and Canada.

Today, I had to think a lot about the topic. I can hardly explain what I'm thinking yet. I've never thought about the bad aspects of spreading English before Mr. Sweetman's lecture. Once I was worried that English might spread so widely that the other languages would die out. But I think it wouldn't happen because each language has relationship to its own culture, and hence it has big power. I hope languages influence one another and make cultures better.

[TITLE] Our Future
Thank you for your very understandable lecture. I can't make a question to ask you because it was difficult to express.

I'm very interested in Canada and want to visit. I know in Canada there are many kinds of people but I didn't know they accept them as Canadian. In Japan, we can't accept like that. I know in my brain but always naturally I think "oh, there is a foreigner." Sorry, but this is cultural difference. Thank you very much for giving a great lecture.

[TITLE] Culture
Mr. Sweetman's lecture was proper as the last one in this seminar. It was easy to listen to and understand. I want a peaceful world in the future. I think we should keep it in our mind that we accept diverse cultures to make it happen. As he said, Muslims and Christians have the same God, but they also have different thoughts. I'm really interested in religions in the world, so "culture" might be the key to know about them. Anyway, I was impressed with his lecture and he is a totally "sweet" man just as his name tells it so!

I appreciate his suggestion to us. "You should have a model for cultural modernity." It was a good chance to think of it. I think it is possible for us to keep Japanese culture and language, while we take in global culture and English. For example, when we go to another country, we automatically realize our own culture, like "This is different from our culture". Like this. I never forget our culture and identity. Toward globalization, the balance between studying Japanese and English is important. Education has a very important role, I think.

[TITLE] What Is Globalization?
It is very hard to give a description of what globalization is. The world is getting opener and wider even now when people can go abroad and communicate with people all over the world. However, I don't think globalization is formed only by going abroad or knowing other countries' people. I think that we need to accept people and lots of ways of thinking. It is difficult to give a definition which can express globalization; "the melting pot" would make minorities disappear while "the mosaic" would not accept each identity in a real sense. It's very fuzzy. There is no clear solution, but we would like to understand what globalization is.

[TITLE] Decision-Making for Our Future
Today's lecture was so thoughtful and had so much information that I felt as if I was attending a cultural or humanities course in a foreign country. I've never been abroad and never exchanged deep thoughts of our own culture or language with foreigners. However, that's why I feel like explaining about our culture to foreign people. To do so, I need to acquire English, the "present" lingua-franca, and of course learn about Japan as well. This is my future vision: everyone in the world respects each different culture and language and, while he or she keeps using local languages, exchanges different ideas through a certain language, which might be English. This is my answer to Mr. Sweetman's question for now.

[TITLE] A Model for Cultural Modernity
That's a really wonderful speech!! All the phrases he said were really impressive and moved me!

The difference between America and Canada was so interesting. I had noticed that many Canadians tend to keep their ancestor's nationality. They told us "I'm Canadian" and after that, they explain their background. I love their sense of keeping "who we are" thinking! I'm studying English, but I don't think I want to throw my nationality away, even if I can speak English perfectly!

I was impressed by his words "you are making a culture!" to us. I'm really glad to listen to his speech!!

[TITLE] Our Future
The lecture was really interesting and made me think a lot about so many things. I think English has become the international language already. I think, I, myself, became arrogant when it comes to globalization because I can speak English. But after listening to the lecture, I realized I was completely wrong. Now I think I have to learn more about my culture and other non-English-related cultures.

I like the Mosaic idea the best. I think Canada is a great country which accepts everyone even though it creates many difficulties inside. Everyone has a different personal/ social history, everyone has different values. We can live in one country but we can't be the same. So I think the Mosaic is a challenging but great model.

[TITLE] My Thoughts about Canada
I've lived in America, so I thought I understood about Canada as well. But today, I realized that I was wrong. Canada had its own culture of "Mosaic." I think it is a good culture, and I feel the kids in his school will grow as they are being touched with this culture.

I do know the feeling when everyone looks at you as a foreigner, but I assume this is the part of their values, so it's hard to change their behavior.
