The Influence of Japanese Soft Power in the American Midwest

感想

[TITLE] Japan's Soft Power
I haven't known about Nagoya American Center or its works. I wonder whether Japanese government also has such institutions in the USA. In my opinion, Japan's biggest Soft Power is on Healthy Living. Recently many people try to eat properly for their health in Japan, and it is often said that Japan's medical treatment is at a high level.

[TITLE] Answer for Your Question!
I just came up with some ideas for his last question, "How can Nagoya American Center let college students know about their events more effectively?" I think most college students have interests in studying abroad (especially the students of the universities which have a department of foreign studies like APU). So it would be a good way to introduce American education, history, music and the life in America by holding a seminar for those students who are thinking of studying abroad. I think it could also build some more interests in America, not only in studying in America even among other students who are not going to. Anyway, thank you for your presentation!

[TITLE] Cooperating Each Other
I'm very sorry that I couldn't catch and understand some parts of speech because of lacking of my English skill.

I got interested in the event in which we can discuss with American students. This time, I can't join it but I hope that such an event would be held more often. Maybe America and Japan need to cooperate more. So, I want to study more about America and understand America.

[TITLE] The Purpose of Promoting the U.S.
I assume that the United States is a great country. In fact, the promoting video we watched at the beginning of the lecture was wonderful and beautiful. However, should we really accept it as what the U.S. really is?

The U.S. has already exported their culture to other countries all over the world, like films and music, etc. It has great influence on us, Japanese and other countries. We should find real America through their promotion.

I was really excited to attend this class today because I'm interested in American culture very much and before this class, I read books which were outside of this classroom (around the door), I was thinking about what we were going to listen to in this class! And, I really enjoyed it. Moreover, from now, I'd like to visit Nagoya American Center. I didn't know I could visit there!! What a pity!

[TITLE] Japan's Soft Power Through Midwestern Eyes
I should tell him about "Mixi"... it's so useful for them to advertise in it. Because there are so many communities about English, and there are so many young people who are interested in learning English or joining such a party or meeting!! But I was so, so shy about answering in this big class. I've regretted that...

His English was too fast for me, so I couldn't catch it well.

[TITLE] Interesting Activity
I didn't know about Nagoya American Center. But now I know about that. If I have free time, maybe I will there. I'm looking forward to enjoying the party. I hope the meals and the foods will be free!!!

[TITLE] Japan's Soft Power Through Midwestern Eyes
I'm really interested in American culture, for instance, music and movies. The States is my favorite country where I want to live sometime in the future. It's the world's most energetic country. I've visited L.A. and N.Y., but I want to visit other places too.

But I have a thing about which I feel very sorry. When I stayed in Canada to study English, lots of friends from various countries who I met there didn't like the U.S. very much. They insist the U.S. is an arrogant and violent country, referring to the wars. I hope the U.S. will stop wars and try to be more understanding to the other countries. It makes the image of the U.S. much better and everyone in the world would love it.

When the student asked you "What is the most attractive aspect of America?", you said " I think that there are many people from different races in USA. That makes the US more attractive".

I was so moved because I thought the same opinion. I have been to the US and I was so surprised to meet people from different races. This aspect was my favorite.

Anyway, I can't go to the concert. This is because I have a part-time job on that day. So sad. However I'm really interested in the NAC. I want to go immediately.

Truthfully, today's speech was a little difficult for me. I felt his way of speaking was fast and I couldn't understand sometimes. I thought strongly again that I want to improve my English. But I also felt that I want to know more about America. The video we watched at first was very interesting and let me feel that I want to travel in America.

I'd like to check Nagoya American Center from now on and join some events.

[TITLE] American Center
Until today, I didn't know about the Nagoya American Center. It is great that America is open to Nagoya and I can actually get so much information form the USA. His idea of talking to young people for mutual understanding is very nice. I've actually been very interested in American cultures since I was 13. But unfortunately I have no regular contact with the USA. So I will try to attend NAC's events and want to know much more about America.

[TITLE] How to Interact
I was impressed by the video! I really liked it because I can see many different cultures. Japan is a one-culture and one-language country. So we don't have so many opportunities to interact with other cultures. Today, moreover, many young people don't know about their own culture. So we need to understand our own country first and collect much more information about foreign cultures. I'd like to learn about many different cultures from now on.

We rarely have a chance to communicate with people who are working at American Center, so this lecture was interesting for me. When I went to the French Embassy, we communicated and talked a lot about Japan and France. There we taught them how to make a paper crane. Maybe it was a good way to make a friendship.

As for the way to notify the events held at American Center, how about putting up an ad on the bulletin board in university?

[TITLE] Great Place for Cultural Communication
I learned that NAC is a great place to study American culture, history and so on. I remembered that I've been to this center for a job interview for the other firm. On the way, I visited the library whose volume of resources impressed me. I found a bulletin board where I could get the contact info of those who want Japanese friends. Then my friends and I had a chance to have a good time with a man from England learning Japanese literature in Nagoya. I'd like to promote this office to my friends who are learning English!

[TITLE] Japan's Soft Power through Midwestern Eyes
Generally, we don't notice that such valuable events as those Nagoya American Center organizes are being held. But today, I realized that we can find and join many functions through the Center in which we can use English even in Japan!

We often think that we don't have any chance to use English in Japan; but only if we search for meetings of this kind, we can get plenty of chances!

Dept. English 4th year
[TITLE] Promote USA!
It was a good opportunity to know about American Center and its activities as we tend to hesitate to get involved in new institutions or events of this sort. Therefore, this lecture encouraged students who are interested in the US to visit the center.

When we think of the US and its culture, it feels like we know them well, surrounded by many American products; however, we actually don't get to know their real culture and people through them. That's why I liked Mr. Stewart's words, "person to person" understanding.
