Why Are Foreign People Interested in Japanese Budo?

感想

[TITLE] The Reason Why Foreigners Choose to Learn Budo in Japan
I know many foreigners are interested in and learning about Japanese "Budo" all over the world, but it was very interesting to hear their voices directly. I've thought that the Budo world in Japan had very strict and closed systems. So, it was impressive to know that the Budo world actually opened the door to foreigners. Also, the two speakers seem to be in good relationships with their "Dojos." It is nice.

[TITLE] Why are Foreign People Interested in Japanese Budo?
I got the impression that both of them are so mentally sophisticated. They have their own belief of sports. I am strongly interested in the beliefs that Mr. Lim follows. I felt that people who are attracted by Japanese Budo are attracted not only by the sports itself, but also by the concept and the belief it has.

[TITLE] There Are Many Kinds of Way to Foreign Countries
I didn't know there is such a university for Martial Arts and many people come from abroad to study martial arts because I didn't have time to do martial arts without high-school class time in my life. However, this would be a very good chance to improve international connections and it will help many kinds of people to feel closer about foreign countries.

[TITLE] The Meaning of Studying
I am very impressed with them, because they have a very sincere attitude for learning Japanese martial arts. Particularly, I was moved by Mr. Tee Hak's principle that continuous learning is important to study; getting a result is different from studying. He gave me a great idea that studying is not the achievement of the result. I am happy to have a wonderful time with his speech.

[TITLE] Miyamoto Musashi Is Great!
The story of Miyamoto Musashi is very interesting. And people from overseas interested in Budo have a longing for Japan. So, I'm glad to think of it.

Maybe I could listen to 10% of their speech. But I can feel with what they say from almost all their gestures. I'm happy to be able to feel my progress.

[TITLE] Hoping Japanese Cultures Spread Overseas
Today, I had interesting lectures. I was surprised that foreigners get interested in Japanese Budo. But I'm also happy to know the fact. But as Ruairi said, if Japanese Judo spreads differently from original, I hope that foreigners will learn in a true way. And I thought today's two presenters might have more knowledge about Japan than me. I want to learn about not only foreign countries but also Japan.

[TITLE] Sports Connection
I really enjoyed their speech. Ruairi said that his way to make a relationship with local people is sports connection. I agree with this idea because I have a similar experience. I visited Sydney, Australia and stayed there for about 20 days as an exchange student. I couldn't talk with Australian students, except my buddy. But one day, we went to a park all together and did American football. After that, I could get along with them!

[TITLE] Having Something in Common
Most people have things that they are interested in. It may be martial arts, may be music or art. It's always good to have one because that can be the start of relationships and they tend to last longer because they have something in common. Finding people who like similar things is not always easy, but that may be a reason that the friendship becomes a good one.

[TITLE] Learning about Japan from Non-Japanese People
Their presentation was very interesting. And it was great to learn Japanese culture, history, things and people from non-Japanese people. They know Japanese traditional spirits better than I do. I feel I have to learn more about my own country. Sports are universal. Even if we fight against people form other countries, afterwards we can be friends and respect other players.

[TITLE] Anyone Wants Real "Sushi"?
I like the example using sushi to explain the difference between Japan and England. When I was in the US, I went to a Japanese sushi restaurant. I expected to eat sushi which I had eaten in Japan, but the sushi I saw there looked totally different. For local people, however, that sushi is real sushi. As Mr. Lennon said in his presentation, it is very important to see the real, true one. By understanding the reality, I think we come to notice a new viewpoint and it broadens our horizons.

[TITLE] Japanese Budo
I was impressed not only with their passion to Budo but also with their personality. Their way of talking was easy to listen to and funny. I think that I'll follow their example as a learner of language and foreign culture. They were very communicative! Also, I felt they understood about Japanese traditional thoughts like "Bushi-do" better than us!! We'd better know these Japanese traditional things more as Japanese. At the same time, I was very happy to know that Japanese Budo was loved by foreigners so much.

[TITLE] Sports Make People Friends
I really enjoyed their speech. They were so interesting. (And I was surprised that Mr. Lim knew Miyamoto Musashi well.) I think Kendo and Judo are less popular than soccer and baseball in Japan. But their speech gave me other good views of these sports. I think Japanese can rediscover attractions of these sports. And I'm sure that sports can make people friends even if they can't communicate with one another by using language. Sports can help us to communicate.

[TITLE] Japanese Culture
I'm happy to hear that many foreign people are interested in Japanese culture, especially Budo. But actually, I don't know about Japan so much. When I was questioned about Japanese culture by an NHK announcer on the road yesterday, I could not answer. I was very ashamed of it. And as Mr. Lim and Mr. Lennon talked about Japan brightly, I thought they were cool.

There are many unique cultures in Japan, for example, Budo, food, kimono, etc. they are all interesting. I think it is also important to know about Japan before we learn about foreign countries.

[TITLE] International Links
Every time I listened to foreigners who know more than me about Japan. I feel ashamed for my indifference to my own country and its culture. These years, many foreigners have come to Japan to learn its culture but if very few of us know about it, we make foreign people disappointed. Thinking back on myself, I was only chasing US or UK culture for years. What a sad thing! We have a great culture in our history and that attracts many people in the world.

We had better not throw away the possibility to have an international link.
