[TITLE] -
I am interested in how we learn communicative skills. Everyone says "English is just a tool of communication". It seems people like the word "communication". Most people say they want to speak in English. They think the most important skill to communicate is speaking and listening. However I think, in today's Japanese education, not only in English classes, but in all subjects, we lack the concept of communication. When I was a student(junior high/ high), I hardly had a chance to express my feelings or ideas even though in Japanese. There was not enough time for presentation and composition. We do not have enough time to "think". So I am very poor at expressing in my words in public. So it is very important to get practical skills, but a more important thing is what we want to convey to the listener. We need more chances to learn communicative skills in Japanese too.

[TITLE] An Ideal Teacher
While listening to the lecture, I was thinking about my favorite teacher who taught me how much fun it was to speak in and study English. Before I met her, I really disliked English. What was special about her or her class was that it was so much fun. I simply enjoyed her class a lot and naturally got more interested in English. I do believe it is decided by a teacher whether a student will like English (or a subject) or not. I remember when I first spoke in English with my own words. I felt great joy at that moment. I felt like they were I created something wonderful in myself. I hope many students find this kind of feeling and love talking in English. I am very curious what the next course of study will be. Also I was very happy to see Mr. Ota who is responsible for the course of study and find that he is a type of ideal teacher.

[TITLE] Compare not with others but with what I used to be yesterday
I was surprised to hear that Mr. Ota had never been abroad. His speech was clear and easy to understand for me. I want to speak English like him. And his topic was interesting. Maybe most of the people who take this seminar had taken classes which aimed at passing the entrance exam. So I could understand what he said. I was surprised that in 1.3 percent of senior high schools, teachers conducted their classes principally in English. They percentage was higher than I thought. But it's too low actually, I hope class like Asahikawa Kita will be held in Aichi and every student becomes able to communicate in English.

[TITLE] English as a communicative tool
I totally agree with him. Actually, we only learned English as a subject for the entrance examination. So I'd felt that English had been just a code, not a language, before I entered this university. But I'm relieved to hear that the Ministry is seriously trying to change that.

I think it is most important to motivate students to study English for communication. My sister, who is a high school student, said: "I don't like English because I don't need to speak English the whole of my life". When I heard that, I thought it is very difficult to motivate such students to study! So I also think teachers need to teach their students why they have to study English.

[TITLE] English Education
When I was a high school student, teachers focused on grammar and reading. So, now, I'm good at the two elements. However, I'm poor at not only speaking and listening but writing. If teachers fostered communication in English, students could improve four main skills because they listen to their friends and think English sentences in their brain. I hope English education system will change in the future.

[TITLE] What an interesting speech he gave us!
To deliver a speech is very difficult especially speaking in English. However Mr. Ota's speech is very logical and easy to understand. On top of that, he gave us a very important hint of motivation to learn English. Also his speech made us laugh. It was a wonderful speech.

[TITLE] Plan in my future
I have had some abstract goals, like presenting my study in natural English. After taking part in Today's course, I think I have created concrete goals, such as writing my diary, watching English sites on the Internet. I will achieve the simple goals.

[TITLE] My own goal
Mr. Ota had asked "Why do we learn English in high-school?" My answer was like this: Because English is now a global language. It's clear that learning English will be a great advantage in our future. But to tell the truth, high-school English class was boring. It was basic. I know the basic knowledge is important. But I felt that communication is more important. So I was very glad that this university, Kendai, has a subject called Communicative English. I didn't know until I came here that speaking and understanding English is fun. For me, "English" is a possibility to succeed in the future. I think it's great that I can enjoy "English" and make use of it to succeed in the future. I think I found my own goal by participating in this lecture.

[TITLE] Why can't Japanese communicate in English??
Before we get started with learning communicative English, we need to know how we communicate with others as a person who deserves respect. Because Japanese people are very afraid of saying something of which they are not sure or afraid of making mistakes, even when they're speaking Japanese. So we should be able to be proud of ourselves first of all. Then we learn to respect others. And we should know, even if we make mistakes, nobody can bring us down. So I think it's more important that we start learning how we communicate in Japanese first.

[TITLE] My opinion toward English Education
Today's lecture is interesting for me because I'd like to know more about education and a job of the teacher. And Mr. Ota taught us communication, and it's also interesting.

Mr. Ota said teachers would like students to foster practical communication abilities. But I think some teachers don't. And I think English is just a language, a tool to communicate with people with, so it's more important to focus on communication than paper tests. But actually so many teachers evaluate students based on paper tests. I think teachers should make good of ALTs and AETs, and have more time to communicate. If they do so, I think much more students can speak English well and communicate with foreigners easily.

[TITLE] English as a Subject in School
"English is a language, not a subject."—that was how the speaker started today. But if you look at English classes taught in Japanese schools, most of the people would say that it's just a subject. Why do we have to learn English in Japanese? I believe Japan is the only country where they teach a second language in their own mother tongue. I see that the government is making efforts in English education, but I see no progress. As a leading country, we must be able to use English as a language. And I hope, in the future, all the students will use English as if it is their mother tongue.

[TITLE] English as a Communicative Tool
Thank you very much for your wonderful speech! I'm planning to become an English teacher and taking classes to obtain a teacher's license. Thanks to your lecture, I realized that English is not a subject but a communication tool. It's true. English enables us not only to increase our knowledge but also to broaden our view, say what we want to say, and make foreign friends. When I teach English, I'd like to tell this to my students.

I was very impressed with Mr. Ota's way of speaking. His speech attracted me very much. He is a great communicator. He showed us the new goal of teaching English in the lower secondary school as "practical communication abilities." I wish it would be successful in the near future. However, I wonder whether the principles of the course of study will make teachers work in the way he expects them to. The reality is, as he argued, completely opposite to the ideal goal. It would take time to accomplish the goal, but that goal should be successful for the next generation.

[TITLE] Gap between the Realities and the Ideals
I'm still not sure, but I want to be an English teacher. Therefore, this lecture was very interesting to me.

I know that English education should focus on practical communication abilities and all teachers give their students the opportunities to speak English in their own words. However, school lacks time to study and teach students. It is easy to criticize the realities in school and display the ideals, but it's hard for the actual school system to change how to teach English. Also I think practical communication abilities should include not only speaking and listening but writing, reading and grammar, too.
