[TITLE] New Way of Thinking
I found it interesting that English is not only the language for native speakers of English, but for the people joining today's globalized world. I sometimes feel intimidated because I'm not a native speaker of English and that means my English cannot be acceptable, I thought. But, I'll change my mind and keep trying to improve my English as "International English"!

[TITLE] Lingua Franca
I realized how important English is as a lingua franca of the world. Since I major in French, I'm disappointed to know that French is not a lingua franca anymore. I was really surprised that Mr. Santos had never been to English-speaking countries, which made me motivated.

[TITLE] Japanese Lingua Franca
In today's presentation, the guest speaker said "Japanese Lingua Franca is Japanese," and that was interesting to me. I've never been abroad but I've never worried about getting information about the world. It is because "someone" who speaks English well translates English into Japanese and put them on the Internet. However, I don't want to owe to the "someone" anymore. I've got to study hard and to become "someone" in the future.

[TITLE]
I was really surprised to hear that Diogo had never been to English speaking countries. He speaks very natural English, so I thought he'd studied English in an English-speaking country. However, it turned out he hadn't, which encouraged me to study English more in Japan.

Some people say, "You can never speak English unless you study abroad," but today he showed me that idea was wrong. And I'm also interested in "lingua franca." It was the first time for me to learn this concept and I really enjoyed knowing its history. I want to share the concept with my friends who study English as a second language.

[TITLE] Isn't It Unfair?
People from English-speaking countries tend to expect us to speak English when they visit Japan. Also, they tend to expect us to speak English when we visit their countries.

I do understand that English is a global language, but I think that is unfair. They should at least try to understand, speak, read, and write Japanese instead of just waiting for us to do the other way around. Otherwise, I think it's never going to be fair.

[TITLE] Functioning in English in Japan
I totally agree with Mr. Santos's opinion. Although my English is not perfect yet, I've already taken advantage of the chances to be able to speak English. As a result, I made friends with Korean, Taiwanese, Mexican and Swiss. I could enter this university thanks to my English skill. And I'm sure I will get more advantages in the future in regard to my career.

I realized how global English was when I started to learn French; although French is a global language too, I have much more opportunities to get in touch with English. This motivates me to learn English harder.

[TITLE] The Bad Effects of Katakana
Spanish and Portuguese have similar sounds to Katakana. So many of them have strong accents, but they speak English fluently. On the other hand, many Japanese depend on Katakana pronunciation and don't try to correct it. Even if we use the English words as Japanese, they often lead to a misunderstanding. I strongly think pronunciation is very important to make our English understood but Katakana English makes bad effects.

By the way, I really doubt that he can live abroad without the local language. It's really hard but brave!

[TITLE] The Function of Lingua Franca
Today, I learned a big thing from you. When I was a junior high school student and started to study English, I wondered why I had to study English. In addition, I'm working at a cram school now and sometimes my students ask me "Why is English one of the subjects we have to learn?" Now I can answer this question properly. It's harder for us to learn lots of languages than to learn English to communicate with people around the world. I'm really impressed with your opinion. Thank you very much. :)

[TITLE] Never Worry About My Skill!!
His English was so good and fluent that I thought he must have been to and studied English in a country where English is spoken. But that's not true. And he also told us not to worry about pronunciation or accent. I've been worrying about that, and I think of myself as a poor speaker because of poor pronunciation. This thought has been keeping me form studying English positively. I don't have to speak English like native speakers.

However, it is very important to learn pronunciation. I will try hard to study English without having a sense of inferiority. This university, Aichi Prefectural University is a great place to study English, because it has great professors and beneficial classes. :) I must not sleep in the class.

[TITLE] Lingua Franca
From the beginning of this lecture, I felt his passion that he was trying to tell us about something important very hard. So I was really impressed and understood what he said very well. While I'm studying Spanish as my major language, I want to learn English because he taught us it's Lingua Franca!! Also he reminded me of the importance of studying grammar. I was tired of studying Spanish grammar but he inspired me today!! I'll study grammar hard too because I have to do it!!

[TITLE] In My Opinion
I agree with his opinion, but I have a different opinion. I think using correct Japanese comes first and getting English comes after. That's because English is a lingua franca, so we use English as a communication tool when we talk to people who come from other countries, and at that time we are requested to explain about our country. So I think knowing our own country is most important.

Anyway, today's speech gives me a fantastic time. Thank you so much.
