Today’s topic was useful for all students. Most students struggle with writing. As for me, I hate writing because my grammar is terrible. Also, I’m not good at assembling sentences. It takes a lot of time when writing. The writing process is meaningful for all university students. High-quality essays are required for us. The writing process has many steps. Especially, I think “prewriting” is useful. I always start to write an essay without making a plan, considering the purpose, and so on. Writers have to make an essay clear what they want to tell readers. In the essay, they also have to explain clearly. To do this, considering purpose is essential. At the same time, I have to think that who will read the essay. Moreover, I found revising is significant though English academic writing class. When we write an essay, the teacher asks us to do peer editing. Even if I was going to write an essay perfectly, my friends find basic mistakes. So, peer editing is effective when it comes to checking drafts. In my case, I have to write a graduation thesis in English. The contents will more academic than now, but I keep in mind thinking about the writing process. I would like to do my best without escaping from writing.

Today, we talked about being a writer/the writing process. I could really sympathize with what she was saying in the video. I don’t like to write or read something because it gets boring and I feel tired, and I cannot concentrate on it for long time. However, there are many opportunities to write reports or essays in this university and I belong to British and American Studies, so I sometimes have to write them in English like this essay. When I write reports or essays in English, I usually pay attention to academic writing because I think it is most difficult English and I’ve been learning it since I entered this university. Academic writing is completely different from what I learned when I was a high school student. In today’s talks, there were many points that are important when I write essays, such as “Am I focusing on the topic?”, “the importance of making outline”, and so on. Also, it is important to check it with my friends so that we may find mistakes objectively. While I am writing, I sometimes forget why I am writing this and what I am writing for. At the end of this talking, there was “identify your goal” and I thought it is very important for people like me. Today’s topic was very interesting and beneficial to me. I would like to improve my writing and have better English skills someday.

Ms. Tracy Franz, thank you very much for your very interesting presentation today. I am learning about academic writing in my university class, so this presentation was very useful for me. When I think back, I used to write an essay while thinking about it in my head. As you said, I should organize my ideas as much as possible and decide how I want to write before I start writing the essay. I think it is very important to make the essay logical, so all the things I learned in this class are very useful for that end. I am majoring in British and American Studies in the Department of Foreign Languages, and I have to write my graduation thesis entirely in English. I believe that my writing skills will be required in various situations in the future. In order to improve my writing skills, I would like to put into practice the tips and methods I learned today from your presentation in my writing.

Thank you very much for recording this quite interesting presentation today. I have had a passion for writing my whole life, but it was not until university that I got to see such potential in myself. Through my years in university, I learned about all kinds of writing, from academic to creative, in various formats but I have struggled with time management for most of my assignments. This presentation has given me a better understanding about the process my brain goes through while writing an essay or story, which I must confess I had never thought of before. The writing classes I have taken up to this day rather focused on ways of planning your essay, which is an essential skill when formatting any sort of writing. However, my biggest obstacle when writing essays or stories up to this day has been coming up with the ideas or prewriting and planning, using the terms used in this presentation, which have always taken me an abundant amount of time. As this presentation combined the two, formatting and idea brainstorming, together, it has given me an idea of how to save brainstorming time while improving the quality of my work. Lastly, I have stopped creating my own stories for a while, again, due to my poor time management skills, but I hope this newly acquired knowledge will open room for that passion of mine once again.

Thank you very much for today’s presentation that is useful for our school life. I wanted to try to write sentences by utilizing what I learned today to improve my writing ability. The element of the writing process that I most wanted to practice is “Prewriting”. That’s because I often skip the prewriting and write sentences, which can make it difficult to adjust the sentences afterwards. I understand that prewriting such as listing, questioning, and researching are important, but I like writing, so I immediately want to start writing sentences. However, from today’s class, I realized once again the importance of the prewriting and learned that it is important to find the relevance of these elements of the writing process because there are many elements necessary for writing sentences or tasks. Therefore, firstly I’ll try to clarify the subject and conclusions when writing sentences, tasks, or assignments. By doing so, I want to be able to find and express my own answers, no matter how difficult the theme or report. That is my goal now! I will do my best every day, thanks to your presentation.

Today's guest speaker was a writer. She talked about the writing method. Hearing her presentation, I felt proud of our English teachers. They well awaken my interest when writing essays and offer assistance. For example, before writing, some teachers take time for brainstorming and help set a theme. After writing, they give time to take turns to read and check "local issues." Moreover, all teachers welcome to advise essays even outside of class time. After submitting, teachers give students a chance to get feedback. Therefore, I would prefer writing. However, even in such lively English classes, I feel writing activities are individual as the speaker said. Thinking if I have to write an essay without any bits of help from teachers, it makes me worry. However, today's talk wiped out my worries, and it taught me how to enjoy making reports. The most interesting tip that I feel was about questioning essays from a journalist's perspective. When I approach the completion of an essay, I began to feel in love with my own words and finally, decided to submit it. Though I noticed it is not the best way. From now on, I would pay more attention to readers and consider what words make readers fascinated. I would make sure to give myself ample time to write in order to enjoy writing more, following the process that the speaker taught.

Although I tried to answer two questions in zoom session, my emoji expression was a little late and not recognized. Thus, I would like to show them here. As she described in the video, I am perfectionist and I am always procrastinating when it comes to tasks. It was common thing for me that I submitted them just before the deadline. I hate writing projects, so there is nothing I can say about the good points. That is because I am not good at expressing my feelings in writing. Even when I have to write 100 words, it takes more than 2 hours. I could say I have never experienced happy time absolutely when I did writing homework. There were tons of great tips, but I personally found making a mind map very useful in particular. I always attempt to make a perfect essay from scratch. After watching your video, I realized how stupid I was. No wonder it took me so many days to complete it. Not to put too much emphasis on perfect writing at the first stage is the bottom line. In addition, getting feedback from others is also instrumental. That is a very simple method, but that can help me do better work. Not only can I revise it, but also I can reread it from subjective perspective. Your lecture was exactly what I needed. I will memorize everything you said and make use of it when I work on final reports I have to tackle from now on.

As students, we have all experienced the struggle of having to write an assignment about a specific topic, and then not knowing what is the right way to start writing. We focus a lot on the grammar and punctuation marks, but the ideas between sentences and paragraphs are not well linked. In today’s class we saw a video where Tracy Franz showed us how she and many other writers use their writing process to make the workload a little bit easier. There are 6 steps in the writing process that can be repeated over and over again as much as one may need them. First, we start with prewriting, brainstorming ideas to know what we are going to talk about. Then, we plan the way we are going to write by using different tools. After that, we move to the drafting stage where we start writing without caring too much about grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, etc. We then revise the text to check if the ideas between everything are focused on the same topic. Depending on what we find here, we could go back to the prewriting and planning stage. Once the focus and development of the text is organized, we start to edit it. This is when we check for all those things that always concern us, such as grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, sentences, flow, etc. And finally, we publish this so that the audience can see and read what we wrote. Those are the steps we can follow to make our writing much easier. All of them have their own strategies and things to follow, and there may be even more things one can do too; it all depends on your own way of writing. As a student, I sometimes follow this writing process, but many other times I don’t. I’m the type of writer that knows what I want to write about from the beginning. When I need to talk about a topic I know nothing about, I investigate a lot and take notes of everything so that It is easier for me to write, and while I’m investigating, I am already making an outline for my text. I usually read aloud a lot to check if the cohesion and coherence between my sentences is okay, but many times I do it a lot and end up confused; when this happens, I take breaks and re-read my text later to check for mistakes. I believe this class was really useful and helpful for many of us, and I hope everyone can have from now on an easier time writing!

Today’s speaker is Ms. Tracy Franz. I learned about the writing process in your presentation. I have many assignments and must write something every day, so I’m happy knowing the knack of how to write in this class. She explained the process in detail; planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and rewriting. I noticed that it is not necessary to write complete sentences from beginning and how important generating several ideas are initially. To be honest, I don’t like writing, not only in English but also in Japanese. She said she sometimes suffers from writing even though she is a professional writer, therefore it is only natural that it’s difficult for me to write. Nevertheless, I will try writing many times and hope to improve my skills.

Not only her writing process but also how she constructed her presentation, presented it, and used PowerPoint were also beneficial for me. Her presentation was very clear, simple and organized. I felt so relaxed listening to it. She is a professor, so I know she has gotten used to doing that, but I think it is very important for university students to get many opportunities to be in public and get used to it. I guess one of the opportunities to do that is commenting on this class. Doing that on zoom is very stressful since everyone can see my face on their screen, but I become more confident every time I do that! As to writing, I really hate it, but I have been writing countless papers for a year instead of tests because of the coronavirus. One of the reasons I hate it is my mind goes blank when I organize my thoughts to writing. It is so difficult to explain the feeling, however, her writing process must help me organize my opinion more easily. The writing process includes many steps like "planning", "editing", "revising" and so on. It takes much time and is exhausting, however, using it is ultimately the shortest way to achieve success in writing. From today, I'm going to use "listing", "exploratory draft" and "questioning". I really appreciate her presentation, but I hope that I can listen to her background someday!
