I was really surprised at and enjoyed Chris’s story about his family and hometown. In particular, the relationship with Koko was interesting for me because she appeared in the English exam that I took before! As he said, she could use languages and I remember being amazed by her intelligence and learning ability. If the pandemic of COVID-19 ends, I want to visit California. I like watching both basketball and baseball. I want to try surfing in Santa Cruz. I am also interested in Silicon Valley because I like the latest tech (I am not in the department of Information Science). I also get a lot and enjoyed learning from Josh’s research. I already knew the importance of sleeping and recently I started to manage my sleeping (with my apple watch) ,but I did not know some averages and the position of Japan. I think Japanese tend to work hard or stay up late even if they notice that they should have good sleep. During the time of Q and A, I learned the relation between quality of sleeping and grades. I will keep in mind to sleep well more carefully.

This was my first time to see Professor Chris and Professor Josh. So, before the class, I was worried a little whether I could catch their English and I could write perfect essays in English grammatically. However, they are very nice and spoke English in a plain way even for me. So, I was relieved. Thank you very much. First, through the presentation of Prof. Chris, I got surprised by his hometown and international family. San Francisco in California, his hometown, is very famous and stylish. A lot of social media companies were born there. Furthermore, his home is in the Bay area. That's too cool. I love ocean views. So, I want to visit there someday, probably after this COVID pandemic. And his wife is Vietnamese. I long for an international marriage because those couples can exchange their countries’ cultures and find new things anytime, anywhere. So, I was envious to know about his wife. Next, I thought I should reflect on my sleep habits through Prof. Josh’s presentation. According to his research, young adults ought to sleep for 7 to 9 hours each day. But I always go to bed at 1 or 2 AM and wake up at around 7 AM. And I very often feel stress. That means my stressful life comes from my lack of sleep. It makes me depressed and nervous. On the other hand, this also means I can control myself by falling asleep well. So, I will go to bed early from now on and I would like to be a stressless person.

Both presentations were very engaging and interesting to listen to, thank you. As for Professor Chris’s presentation, I quite enjoyed his introduction of his hometown as it gave me a quick view on how living in California is as I have never been to America before. I personally have grown up watching American films so just seeing some pictures of scenery I had never seen or learned about universities I had never heard of before and this was quite a unique experience for me. As for Professor Josh’s presentation, I could not relate more to the data he based his presentation on. I have studied abroad before and one thing that I noticed is that Japanese universities have way more modules to do per semester, while universities abroad have a few big modules with several classes and seminars underneath them. Being freshly back to a Japanese university from this semester my impression is that most of my work is mostly unrelated to each other as each module is different, which means I would have to spend more time overworking myself with research and different projects. I personally thought from experiencing two different kinds of education that that there is a possibility that countries which have an education system that intensifies fewer modules with more follow-up classes would have less stress and sleep deprivation levels. As for this hypothesis, I would like to suggest that fewer modules give students a narrowed-up study field that they can intensify, saving them introductory level search as they advance in years through university and resulting in them gaining confidence in the work they are doing.

I have never heard about Koko the gorilla. I was interested in her so I checked about her. I was very surprised that Wikipedia says she sometimes lied and even made jokes. Of course it’s not so reliable, but I could know she was really smart. I wanted to ask you what did you talk about with her. And your hometown is California. I have an image of Disneyland if I hear the word California. Also, I’ve watched La La Land, so I know Los Angeles is a beautiful city. I want to go there someday. And it’s nice that you have a big family and you are close to them. I don’t have any sisters or brothers and I have only one cousin. So sometimes I wish I had more relatives like you do. About Josh’s presentation, now I get about 7 hours of sleep which is very healthful, but I think this is because I don’t have a part-time job. And I’m in my first year of the university so maybe my homework is not that hard compared to higher grades. However, I started to live alone recently, so I realized that doing housework actually takes a lot of time. I need to have a part-time job of course, so my life will be hard. I wonder how other students manage this ( I know they cut their time to sleep.) There’s no other way, but I think that’s how university students live. I can’t believe students in other countries take enough time even they have to do more homework than we do.

I’m going to write an essay about stress and sleep. In my opinion, sleep is very important in our lives. Sleep is very important to me. If you don't get enough sleep, it will affect our physical and mental health that day. When stress increases due to lack of sleep, you cannot concentrate on your lessons and you make more mistakes. In my case, due to the influence of coronavirus, I spend a lot of time at home and I have more sleep than before. I have an average of 6 hours of sleep. I want to sleep a lot, but there are people who are healthy even with a short sleep. There is a suitable sleep time for each person. I think that the quality of sleep is more important than the quantity of sleep. No matter how much you sleep, if the quality is not good, it is not good sleep. To improve the quality of sleep, I think it is important not to watch too much on your smartphone or TV before going to bed and to keep the room temperature at an appropriate level. I want to enrich my life by getting a good sleep.

I have taken Chris’s class twice, so I know him of course. However, I didn’t remember all of the information that he gave us. (sorry!) It is interesting that he has a very international family. Actually, I have an international family too, but his one is more international. I was interested in his parents. I wonder how his mother and father got to know each other. My father is also from a foreign country, and he came to Japan to work. It is not easy to think that his mother moved from Germany to America to work, so I became want to know about her. About Josh’s presentation, I think I have enough sleep every day. I sleep by at least 11 PM and get up at 7 or 8 AM So, I sleep about 8 to 9 hours. In addition, I think I have less stress. I don’t have any concerns in my life, and I think I can handle a problem if it occurs to me. I can say that I am an optimist. However, I learned that it is not the only reason that I don’t have any concern by Josh’s presentation. I might be helped by sleeping to be happy and healthy. I think so because when I can’t sleep well because of my smartphone or something like that, I always have a headache and am angry. I realized how important sleep is to our body, and I decided to keep on having a sleep properly.

I had a good time to take your first classes , Josh and Chris! I learned from Josh’s presentation that stress is closely related to sleep and most Japanese people have been suffering from a lack of sleep. These days, I am worried about everything and feel depressed every day. And, due to COVID-19, I can’t see my friends easily and express my worries to my friend. So, I had been wondering how I can think about everything in a positive way since today. But, I was sure that to sleep well will make us positive today. So, I will try to have positive thinking by sleeping well from now on! And, I thought Chris’s family is a warm and close family when I saw many pictures on the screen. In the future, I want to get married and have a family like you all. And, I think Chris is a kind, nice and heart-warmed person. And today, I turned out why he is such as a kind person. That’s because his family is an international family. So, he must adopt global awareness and be able to look at everything from a global point of view. Therefore, he can interact in a friendly way with everyone!

To Mr. Chris:
Actually, I’m thinking that I want to visit California while I am a university student, so I was surprised to hear that you are from California. Your presentation made me excited. I often watch NBA games and one of my dreams is watching NBA games in an arena. When I heard your answer to my question, I was so jealous! Thank you for giving me interesting presentation. (By the way, my favorite NBA player is Paul George.)
To Mr. Josh:
I think I’m one of the sleepless students. Especially when I was high school student, I was often sleepless. At that time, I always struggled with myself because I wanted to stay up late watching YouTube even though I knew that staying up late at night and watching smartphones until late night were bad for my brain. Therefore, I think smartphones are completely one of the causes of sleeplessness for students these days and a lot of students are suffering from smartphones and YouTube. In addition to, I was interested in something. Why are Singaporeans more sleepless than Japan? (I guess one of graphs said that Singapore recorded about ?35% about the number of sleepless people. Japan was ?29% in the graph.) Does Singapore’s students have a lot of tasks or are there other reasons?

Professor Josh talked about relationship between sleep and stress. His research revealed that Japanese students are relatively sleep deprived. As he said in his presentation, the reason for this situation is many Japanese students are struggling with time management. We Japanese university students need to make time to do a lot of classes and homework, though need to work for school fees and for money for having fun. Many friends of mine work almost every day and every night to get enough money to live because they cannot get financial support from their families. Now, the Japanese government is trying to raise the fees of university. If the fee increased, more students will get more stressed and this will cause bad health problems. I do not want to see people become unhealthy and have suicidal thoughts. Professor Chris presented about his hometown, family and friends. Actually, my hometown is the sister and associated city of Anaheim, one of the cities in California and I've been there 7years ago. I have some friends in California so I could feel very close to Mr. Chris. I felt very sorryfor Mr.Chris because he said he could not go back to his hometown this summer. I also could not go back my hometown because of Covid-19. My hometown is in the country so people in my city will not like me to go there from Nagoya, an urban city. Another reason I did not go back to my home is that parents live with my grandfather. If he gets covid-19, he will suffer. Now, I really miss my family. I feel this emotion strongly after I listened to his presentation.

In today’s class we listened to Chris’ and Josh’s presentations. The first one was from Chris, and he talked about his personal life. The second one was Josh’s, and he talked about sleep and stress. Chris started by showing photos about his family. He has a really big family and they all look really happy. They (his sister’s family) live in Santa Cruz in Northern California. Chris then talked about his friend Koko. It was really interesting when he told us the Koko could use the American Sign Language, that is really impressive. Chris then talked about Bay Area food. He showed some pictures of tacos, and since I’m Mexican that made me really hungry. After that Chris told us about some famous bands in the Bay Area, and said that he actually plays in a band too, but unfortunately due to Coronavirus, he couldn’t go to play this time. I liked Chris’ presentation because he talked about himself, and that is something not many people like to do. I would definitely like to listen to more of his stories. The next presentation was from Josh. He talked about the relationship between sleep and stress. Since I actually like a lot about topics related to mental health, I enjoyed this presentation a lot too. Apparently, we are supposed to sleep at least 7 hours, but not many people around the globe can sleep that much. He displayed a graph where we could see some countries and their sleep schedules. I was not surprised to see Japan at the bottom, but what did surprise me was to see Mexico nearly in the middle. I thought Mexicans slept a lot. Josh then talked about how poor sleep quality can harm us, such as more chances of getting sick, higher chances of injuries, and even death. One thing that got my attention was that poor sleep quality can cause you depression and lower self-esteem. Josh then continued with stress on students. Since we are university students, it is normal that we are stressed, but once again Josh showed a Graph where we could see how stressed students are, and the numbers were high. It surprised me the fact that for some reason, women are more stressed than men, I wonder why? Finally, we saw a relation between sleep and stress, “If sleep goes down, stress goes up”. I believe this is a bad habit that can cause very serious problem since it gets us in a vicious circle, so I think that we should learn time management strategies so that we reduce the stress and gain more sleep hours to help our physical and mental health. Both Chris and Josh were really interesting. The presentations were fast and easy to understand. I believe this is going to be a really interesting class!
