Though I wasn’t so interested in tourism industries, by listening to the speaker’s presentation I really understood how necessary it is for Japan and how many positive possibilities tourism industries have for Japan’s future. I totally agree with Chris Pichering’s opinion; “good service is service that makes guests want to come back”, and I felt that this phrase works for every kind of service. Since I work as a waiter in a wedding hall, the speaker’s phrase, “Understanding what guests want, not showing them your own skill is important in good service”, impressed me in many ways. I will always remember his words from now on.

Thank you for your presentation. Until today, I had not seen many people who were so engaged in their jobs which made me worry about my future, but you gave me hope! I thought that working as a person who gives service would be exhausting because of rude customers, but you made me realize that it is the great staff and great service that makes customers happy. I am very interested in working at an international company and I would also like to take the risk of giving customers personal service in my daily life as a university student.

The presentation reminded me of when I did a part time job in a ryokan for a month this summer. Unexpectedly, some guests from Europe visited the ryokan, so I tried to talk with them in English. I was the only person who spoke English, so they really relied on me and at the end they said thank you many times. It was a great experience for me. If you go on holidays abroad and buy experience, language and communicating with others are essential to enjoy your holiday. When I went abroad and had difficulties with communicating with others, I couldn't fully enjoy my trip. It's truly important to make the best of both worlds.

English and Hospitality in Niseko.
I really enjoyed Chris Pichering’s speech and I’m interested in HTM, NISEKO. I learned a lot from his speech about how we can make many tourists enjoy their experience. In NISEKO it is important to try to understand what guests want and try to communicate in any way. I was impressed with his phrase “Good service is that makes guests want to come back.” Now I work for Starbucks and many guests come (Japanese and foreign). When foreign people come there, I’m upset that I can’t communicate well. But, from now on I won’t be shy, and I will positively communicate with guests. And, I will try to work thinking about what guests want. I’ll do my best!!

English and Hospitality in Niseko
I was impressed by 2 points in Chris’ presentation. First, I learned it’s important to do what tourists want to do and provide for them by talking to them. I have an interest in tourism so, I want to provide excellent hospitality and make them comfortable. I thought that talking to them and knowing their demands is important. Second, I thought “don’t be shy” is the most important point in his presentation. Actually, I’m very shy and can’t speak to people who I don’t know. I can’t speak English fluently. So, I will try not to be shy and I want to show my attitude that I want to show interest in you. It’s important when I want to know customer’s thoughts.

Today's speech changed my way of thinking a lot. I thought good tourism for foreigners is experiencing real Japan. I know Japan is unique and different from other countries. I believed the most important thing is not teaching artificial Japanese culture, just like Mr. Pickering called ‘Disney Japan’. I was shocked in a good way to know about the idea. To make ‘Disney Japan’, which is comfortable for foreigners, is one way of providing omotenashi. I noticed many kinds of tourism in which the demands of each person should be recognized for every single person. However, as one person, what I can do is to not be shy. I'll try to do that first of all!

Thank you for your presentation. I am from Toyama prefecture, which is also famous for heavy snow, so it was very interesting to watch and listen to his presentation. Also, I am learning about tourism in Aichi in my other class and have to make a plan to welcome inbound foreign tourists. So, I want to use two points that you talked to us for my project. The first one is “good staff makes guests want to come back. It is good service.” In Japan, we have to increase “repeaters” to make our country richer and more developed. So, it is a good trip for that. The second one is “understanding what guests want.” It is important not to push our ability or hospitality to guests. I think trying to do that produces good service. I want to keep these things in my mind and continue to study tourism. Thank you very much. I hope I will go to ニセコ someday!

A lot of friends tell me I'm very brave for leaving my hometown starting a new life in a big city like Sao Paulo and for leaving to Japan. Honestly, I always saw this as normal live your life the way you think you'll be happy. But when I heard Chris saying he left his job so fast for something he had never worked with before I couldn't help but to think he was very brave and a little crazy. I guess I saw myself in this kind of experience and it gives me more strength to pursue what I think happiness is, or at least mine. On a side note, what he said about service in Japan being famous worldwide for its excellence, versus a more personal service which is very hard to find here, it resonates strongly with my personal opinion. I wish the service was less robotic, would follow fewer rules/bend some rules so customers would feel more at home and would want to return. Finally, I'm trying to help Japanese persons with English and it's a great way to make new friends as I have done already. English is really important for everybody. I have touched it myself after arriving here.

First of all I just want to say thank you a lot for a great presentation. This one contains a lot of topics about the Niseko area, tourism there, good service and the importance of learning and speaking English. In this essay I want to share my own experience, the main theme about English in my life (as a foreigner). Firstly, English helps me to live abroad. I come From Russia and am learning English and Japanese (that level is lower) at my home university. The result of my learning is absolutely great because here in Japan nobody actually speaks Russian. English really helps me when I do not really know how to say something in Japanese. Secondly, people try to speak with me in English when I can't understand Japanese. Not in my native language.

Today's talk was amazing because Chris showed his words through his expressions. He made us feel comfortable and not afraid to participate, nor to make mistakes. He used words like happy, outgoing, and brave. But, I think he missed one important word, and it is passion. You can notice that he is so passionate about making others happy, and that's great because sharing is what makes the difference in these types of jobs. It's shocking that the intangible things have all the power when it comes to tourism. it all relies on the experience and the other things do not matter, but the hospitality does. I like a lot the idea that he showed about what was the size of your world if it has to be measured with the language you know, so it caught my attention because it is so true. If we speak English, our world will become bigger. Thank you so very much.
