I really enjoyed Ms. Thatcher’s presentation. Most people are not often aware of where the information they have is coming from and I’m not an exception. In modern society, there are many media sources and people get a lot of news from them. It is said that the newspaper is disappearing because the younger generations get information from TV or their smart phones online instead of reading it. However, I found out that we should pay attention to the kind of sources whether we use smartphones or newspaper. This lecture will be useful for me in the future.

Thank you for your lecture, but I couldn’t catch all of what you said because today’s topic was difficult for me, so I will offer my opinion about elections such as the one talked about. Now, the president of the U.S. is Donald Trump and I think he has both a good and bad side. He said American first. I like this, more specifically, I like this way of thinking. This way of thinking is normal. Everyone should be important to themselves. However, he is a little bit childish, I think. The head of North Korea and he are always saying something ugly to each other. I don’t want to hear that news.

This term, I took the current English class and read the book written by Donald Trump. That’s why, in this lecture, there are many terms I knew from the book and I could understand thanks to that background. In this book, Trump often says, “There is a lot of fake news.” When I hear that campaign staffs must be careful when speaking to reporters, I thought maybe fake news will happen in this situation. However, Trump says mass media is good because they bring attention to Trump although they make fake news. I think he is amazing. I think it is important to be sure where and whom information is about, and have variable perspectives about the problem.

In the Presidential Election in 2015, I remember that most of the national news media including New York Times and CNN often said implicitly that Donald Trump would not win the election and they covered Trump’s scandals and problems more than his good points. I wondered why Trump won the election despite of those news stories. I think I could get hits today why such a situation occurred because the speaker told us where the news came from. I think that most of the national news stations “pitched” each other and they did not try to mix sources well or they just ignored some sources. I am so glad to have tips about how I should understand news. As a media consumer and global citizen, I would like to know how to deal with a lot of information.

In today’s presentation, I thought I did not know about politics. I tried to avoid studying of politics, so this time I tried to do my best to understand it. It was a shame that I did not have knowledge about American politics even though I belong to British and American Studies Department. Today, I learnt a lot about the system of American politics. The system is quite complicated not easy. Compared with the system of Japan, I suppose the U.S. system is more difficult. Ms. Thatcher also told us about mass media, nowadays. There are so many choices for candidates to promote themselves. As for voters, we have a variety of choices in mass media. It is important for both of them to care about where information came from, and to consider it critically. I try to pay attention to politics and mass media as much as I can.

I think, to get correct and real information about politics, we need good articles. When it comes to the accuracy of information, in my opinion, these articles have to use more than one source or poll in the street. Besides, to make discussion more thorough, we have to consider all of the social issues. In order to do this, I think, one thing is necessary―education. Plan to hire more teachers who support discussion of politics by school students. If more and more people especially young people can get hold of correct information about politics and then hold discussion it may make their country better!

This presentation was especially interesting for me as a student of advertising and communication. I was already interested in politics, but her words gave me a new perspective of how everything works inside, and that stirs my curiosity. I don’t think I will end up working in politics, but you never know: If that’s the case, I will remember the experience of listening to Miss. Thatcher’s talk.

With more possibilities there are more options but also more things that need to be taken into consideration. As if politics was not hard enough mass media just raises it to a different level. Depending on how well you grasp the essence of the media and the way that people think, you can both harm and help people. And given the complexity, I’m still amazed at the fact that some people could win the election.

I still remembered the day of the 2016 election like it was yesterday. Even though we were in harmony, we had an election party and stayed up until 6 am to watch it. And all of us were shocked. It was the first time that I really cared about U.S. politics, simply because I was too young before. So I basically started to understand the U.S. election system, and it was really interesting to hear and learn about the much less popular primary elections in Germany. I believe that more people should know about it as the politics of the U.S. influences the whole world in some way. Thank you for the presentation.

Today’s presentation was about how a political campaign is run in the U.S. Ms. Thatcher explained many things that I had no idea of and it was very interesting. I learned about the different types of staff and the work that a campaign demands. The relationship that the campaign staff and the press to maintain seems to be very complicated. Frankly, Ms. Thatcher did a fantastic job at explaining everything.
