This lesson was really interesting! I can learn the differences in the structure of TV programs in Japan and the US. There are some techniques in TV. Before this lesson, I had never known about any techniques. The cut is one of techniques. The production staff chooses each cut. And both Japanese style and the US style have positive points. We can find differences not only about cuts, but also the situations, speaking content, and channel setting. I also learned about copying on TV. Some scenes make me feel deja vu. I belong to the Japanese Culture Department, and I learned about Japanese literacy for the first time. So I’m really interested in copying from other sources. I think watching TV is reading TV and it means reading culture. Today’s lesson influenced me very much.

The content of today’s presentation was quite interesting. In this essay, I will talk about two things. First, I found differences between Japanese and American TV programs. They are interesting because I did not notice about those kinds of points. Sometimes when I watched films, I paid attention to cuts. Yet it was the first time to have a look at TV programs’ structures. Through comparing two types of programs, we can see cultural differences at the same time. This was pretty fascinating. Second, as for literacy, so called how to read TV and what you read, every TV programs’ editor cuts their whole program depending on what they want to show the audience. Sometimes this works very well whereas other editors try to draw the audiences’ attention in a bad way. We have to care about what TV editors try to convey, and understand it. This is the most important thing in our lives, I think. Thank you very much for a great presentation.

Thank you for your interesting presentation. Your presentation was very exciting for me because I’m very interested in working in a media field in the future. Also, I was born in America and lived there until I was 11 so I grew up watching American shows and dramas. I had kind of the same feeling as you when I first saw Japanese shows and dramas. The most interesting part for me was I learned that, in general, when we’re watching Japanese shows, we feel like we are invited but in American shows, we’re completely in the audience. I think that the differences between the shows came from cultural, societal and international differences. It would be great if I could talk with you personally I will definitely go to Icotoba when I have time.

I didn’t know this and when I saw the TV commercial which you showed us, I didn’t notice the racial implications, so I’d like to notice these things. The second things I learned from your presentation is that, we have to think for ourselves. We shouldn’t believe everything on TV programs. When I watched the TV show which showed Korean people hating Japanese, I felt sad and I thought all Koreans thought the same way. But after listening to your presentation, it’s not true. Today, I could learn new ways to watch TV. I always watch TV without thinking about what it means, just to enjoy it. And also, sometimes I was told by my teacher or parents “Don’t believe everything that is told to you by TV or the internet. Because it can give us wrong information. But I thought that was not correct. I think TV programs maker or articles on internet writers just show us what they want us to see. So, they cut the scene that they think they need to so they can tell us their story. In short, it’s not wrong information, just one side of the story. This idea is very important, so I want to tell it to everyone.

I know the style of TV shows are different between japan and other countries because I always watch Korean TV shows. And I noticed a difference between Japanese comedy shows and Korean ones. The differences are in the delivery of the joke. For example, in Japan, if some “funny” man tell funny joke, another “straight” man says something serious while beating the “funny” man strongly. But in Korean, beating other people is not good manners, no matter the reason. So when Korean comedians appeared on Japanese television and Japanese “straight” men beat the Korean “funny” man as a Japanese “joke”, it became a very big problem in Japan, and many Korean people felt the jokes an insult to Korea. Therefore, as you say, the TV style which we think natural is not a general style in the world, so TV program makers should think about the difference and unconscious discrimination more deeply.

This was one of the best lectures we had so far in my opinion. I think we grow up learning to accept what we see on TV the way it is without at least doubting or having a critical eye and sometimes we end up believing in things that don’t have accurate information. So, I will try to watch the TV programs differently from now on. As for the difference between Japanese and American TV shows, I think in part it has something to do with the people’s personalities. For example, since Japanese people are more conservative and reserved, that is reflected on TV by making its style more family-talk-like. Whereas in the States, they have a speech-style show because they’re more individualistic and respect each person’s opinion.

There is one thing that I learned from the lecture today. This is that TV shows in the U.S and Japan are very different form each other even though they are the same. American TV shows tend to talk about social stuff while many Japanese TV shows are about food. I thought that the difference is very interesting, but I also that Japanese should talk about social things to make young people more interested in politics and society. I think this is one of the reason why Japanese people are not paying attention to social issues compared to other people outside of Japan.

Because I’m studying advertising, I need to study this subject during my career. It is interesting and funny as we normally let go details. This presentation gave me a new perspective of how to study Japanese television and a new idea for my thesis. Maybe my opinions differ from those of Ma. Hack, but still, I learned a lot today. I’m excited to learn more about this topic because it will help to improve my career perspective and life, and make me a better professional.

When I first saw the title of today’s lecture, I thought that it is going to be interesting and it was interesting indeed. Mr. Hack is an excellent story teller and it seems that he put much effort to make this presentation so exciting (showing TV show’s clips adding subtitles, etc.). His talk made me look at Japanese television from a different angle. I never felt positive about television in general because it often misinforms people. Probably, TV is not bad itself, it opens the whole world for us as Mr. Hack said, but we should always think as we are enjoying TV.
