Thank you for an amazing lecture today. Actually, this lecture was one of the most interesting ones for me. Although I'm interested in translation rather than interpretation, the story about medical interpretation was so meaningful to me. These days we come to hear the word "diversity" more and more, and in fact the number of LJP people in Japan is rapidly increasing. However, the system of Japanese government, and the views of Japanese people are behind the times. I'm sure that medical interpreters should be rewarded socially and financially as soon as possible and for that, we as individuals should realize the importance of the job. This lecture was a good trigger for me to realize this.

In 2020, the Olympic Games and Paralympic will be held in Japan, and I heard that the Japanese government will build casinos in order to attract more foreign tourists. However, after hearing the speaker's story, I realized that we should put priority to other issues, and one of those issues is medical settings. I found that what Ms. Kim is doing as an interpreter is very important because medical concerns life-threatening, and I realized nobody including doctors and members of the family can take the place of interpreters. However, in fact, so many LJP patients cannot access medical interpreters because of financial reasons or lack of knowledge. And medical interpreters are in a tough situation and they do not receive enough payments although their job is very important. I think that we need a specific system for medical interprets and above all for LJP patients. I think that now is the turning point to change the current situation. Finally, I am very happy to have an opportunity to know the reality of Japan and the role of medical interpretation.

One of my dream is being an interpreter, and I knew there is a job of medical interpreter. When I was a high school student, I went to Vietnam as part of a volunteer group. Then I had to go to an international hospital. I wasn't able to understand English so well, so I was helped by a medical interpreter. That's why I want to be an interpreter, especially related to medical one. I didn't know to use the first person to talk with doctor of\r patients. And I learned we shouldn't interpret if we don't have enough confidence. Now, japan and Aichi are suffering from lack of interpreters, so it might be a chance for me, but I think there are many problems to be solved. Through this presentation, I realized I should keep studying Spanish or English to use them for the future.

When I studied in Germany, I had a small operation and stayed a night in hospital. At that time, I used a medical interpreter. Most doctors and nurses were not good at English. I couldn't understand about the surgery because I was also not good at German. So, the medical interpreter was so great help for me. I was so nervous to have surgery in a foreign country. I felt that she is an angel and at the same time I thought how great a job medical interpreting is!!

There are many languages in the world. Among them English is said to be an international language. The number of LJP residents and tourists are increasing and more interprets are required. When LJP people come to a hospital, there are patients whose native languages aren't Japanese, even so doctors have to talk with them. It's difficult for all doctors because they need to know different languages, have a high comprehension skill, medical and cultural knowledge, and protect privacy and so on. And they have to avoid misunderstandings to prevent harmful outcomes for the patients' health. Then medical interprets can help them. I'm currently learning Chinese and English, so I attended today's speech presentation. I think that it is wonderful to use foreign languages to be able to help people. So, I want to work with English and Chinese to help foreigners after graduating from my university.

I haven't heard details about medical interpreter. There are two points which I learned in her talk. First, for accuracy, you shouldn't say your own idea when you meet a problem related to difficult words. In medical settings, a tiny mistake of translation could be a big mistake in treatment. So, I learned that medical interpreter is a job with a lot of responsibility. Second, as society becomes more globalized, the number of problems that we face will increase, such as she said that the number of foreigners is increasing in Japan, and then medical care is appearing more clearly. So, I think we should consider about globalization from various aspects.

Medical interpreters are needed in many places in Japan. Actually, I live in Mie, there are many foreign people who don't understand English and Japanese. They work in the car factory and they don't have to use both languages so much, therefore their language ability has not improved. However, their children know Japanese because they play with Japanese at school in most cases. They can understand Japanese, so their parents take them to the hospital as an interpreter. It's a big problem because children get one load on their mind if their parents have a bad illness and a doctor describes the condition to them first. They might suffer from a conflict reporting the illness to their loved ones. So, interpreters are needed, I think."

I am a student nurse, so I could enjoy this presentation and learn a lot. I learned about medical interpreters in detail for the first time. I knew that LJP residents or tourists are increasing and medical interpreters in Japan will be needed more. Not only patients, but also medical professional need medical interpreters, so I thought that a system of medical interpreters in Japan has to be changed to be like that of America. Also, in order to give patients the right medical treatment or remove their anxieties or questions, the ample network between medical professionals and medical interpreters is very important, I thought. So, I want to learn about them more and I want to study English in order to be able to explain N.B. when they use medical interpreters for LJP.

I specialize in nursing and study French too because I want to join "Doctor without Borders" and when I become a nurse I can help patients from abroad in the hospital in the future. I heard so big hospital has hired medical interpreter. But if a patient who needs an interpreter enters the hospital, interpreters can't be with them all the time. If I have any language skills and can help them, they will trust me and feel relieved. For example, when I go to travel abroad, if someone can speak Japanese I can feel happy like that. It's like the same feeling. Medical words are very difficult, so we need medical interpreters. But we also have to study foreign languages.

Today's presentation was very interesting. I got to study translating and interpreting in my university as a part of my major last year, so I was quite excited to hear about such an important field of interpreting as medical interpreting. In my understanding, being an interpreter is not an easy job itself, so it must be very responsible in the medical field as accuracy here plays the greatest role. As a foreigner in Japan, I fully understand how language barriers easily become a problem in daily life, not talking about health and medical treatment. This is the one of frustrating things about feeling a foreigner. Also, the point about equality and equity made me think a lot. It's a very deep though as it may be applied not only to medical interpretation, but also to any other aspect of social life.
