I agree with Ms. Hattori’s opinions. Firstly, I also think moving and using gestures are useful for learning English. This is because they can work as a part of communication. In addition, I think learning foreign language is similar to sports. So, the more we use our body when we study language, the deeper we learn. Secondary, I think it is important to make students say sentences not words. If teachers allow them to use words-― only communication, students can’t improve their communication.

Thank you very much for coming for the lecture. Your idea about choosing a path to take was interesting and made me feel a little bit comfortable. I am only 20 now and there are a lot of paths to choose: Where to study abroad? What job should I get? When to get married? Etc… When people confront these important choices, they are worried about their future and scared to choose one, but after hearing your words “If you don’t like the results, you can close the door and try a new one,” it relieved the tension I have felt.

I enjoyed your lecture on the MAT teaching method. Combining speaking practice with gestures sounds like a very memorable method and also a fun one too. For kids, enjoyable lessons are needed to help concentrate them on studying, so it might be a great opportunity for both play and study. I’m interested in teaching languages, both English to children and Japanese to foreigners, so knowing such kinds of methods is quite meaningful. Maybe, depending on the type of learners, I must change the way I teach, but I would like to be Miss Hattori because she taught us cheerfully and she enjoyed explaining things too. Lastly, I want to teach learner not only about language but also about the fun of learning it.

As a foreigner who has grown up in Japan, I know how hard it is to be a bilingual child. Since, I live in Japan and have studied in a local school, I have learned Japanese without difficulty and now it is much easier for me to speak in Japanese, even to my parents. If there is a choice between a simple way and difficult way, I guess people would usually choose the easy way. I gave up speaking my mother tongue, but now I really regret it. So it’s ok to e strict with your children for their future. Eg: ignoring them if they don’t speak English.

Probably the most shocking part of the presentation was when the speaker answered that she started studying English when she was 18. I know others also were amazed because Ms. Noriko spoke English very well despite learning it quite late. A lot of us here chose this class because we like English, and we want to improve our vocabulary and communication skills. However, it taught us more than learning a language. It taught us that it’s never too late to try something new, and that perhaps, someday, it will be our turn to stand on the stage, and inspire the next generation of Kendai students.

I was surprised by Ms. Hattori’s many experiences. She has studied abroad, taught at a public school, and now she has her own English school. I thought that was amazing. I enjoyed experiencing her English class, acting like as if I were a 7 year old child. I learnt that rhythm and gestures are important in order to conduct a lesson. From her talk, I learnt raising a bilingual child is not easy. She has to talk in English as well as Japanese depending on the occasions. But I think that would make her life interesting.

When I was an elementary school student, I couldn’t understand any English words. One day a Japanese English teacher and an ALT started a game in class. It was like a speed game and the students who could answer her question could sit down. I was very ashamed because all my classmates stared at me. So at that time, I started to hate English. But the following year I decide to go to an English club to get back at my classmates and fortunately my English teacher was a good person for me. From that experience I recovered my confidence. I think that the method of teaching English is important for young children.

Thank you for coming. Your presentation was very active. When we played the “What can you do game” with gestures, I remembered that I started to learn English in elementary school. Then, I thought English was a subject, but that it was fun! I remembered the spirit with which I began. Thank you. And, I always hesitate to make a decision. However, I’m going to have courage and try to challenge everything.

Her experience that she presented today was very interesting and exciting to hear. Because it was very close to my experience in the U.S. Also, her story after she came back to Japan really made me think deeply about my future. I can sympathize with her feeling that she didn’t like people calling her “miss interpreter” when she worked as a sales person because I was called names in the same way when I worked in clothes shop. Those coworkers associated me with people who can just speak a foreign language instead of judging me on my ability to work.

The presentation was really interesting. Not only because she talked about the importance of studying English, but also because she talked about how inspirational life could be. It’s beautiful to think you have all the possibilities in the world open to you in your own life, I like this kind of presentation. I hope more people could understand this kind of message, like me, because I think it is a really important point in life. Moreover, to see everyone acting like 7 years old children in the lecture was really funny!
