During the speaker’s presentation, I really felt his love for his country. He’s been in Japan for more than 2 decades now, but he still remembers the songs that his mother taught him as well as other folk songs, not to mention he can still speak Irish. I quite admire this because I know people who have stayed in foreign countries for only 5 to 10 years or so but have already forgotten their mother tongue. I also admire his knowledge of his own country. When I meet foreigners, I ask them different information about their countries, but they can’t answer most of my questions. As a person living in a foreign country, Brian taught me that no matter how long I stay in a different country, it’s important not to lose my love for my own country.

I am actually planning to study abroad in Ireland and I had been really looking forward to attending this class. I love the warmth and the beautiful nature of Ireland. The history of Ireland also interests me. The country had a lot of troubles in its history and now Ireland is a very peaceful country. I’m interested in how the people in Ireland are thinking about “peace”. Thank you for the lovely singing and presentation!

I’m in the British and American Studies Department, so I knew about the location of Ireland. But I didn’t know about Ireland itself like population and the national flag. It was a good chance for me to know about the country and to take an interest in the country. I don’t know about Irish history, but I think the national flag, which means white (peace) between green (nature) and oranges (people from Europe), is very nice. And it was the first time for me to listen to a mandolin. Its sound, Professor Cullen’s voice, and the song itself were wonderful.

Last year I watched the Japanese drama “Massan”. It is a love story about a Japanese man and an Irish woman. And the wife often sang Irish songs. I was impressed by her singing and became interested in Irish songs. Since then I sometimes listen to Irish songs and I found that these songs are always gentle and listening to them makes me warm. And Irish people sing songs very gently, tenderly and warmly. So I love listening to Irish songs and I would love to go to Ireland. I heard that Irish people play music using spoons, is it true?

I have never studied about Ireland, but today, I learned about many aspects of Ireland. In Ireland, various industries are developed, for example livestock farming and chemicals. To my surprise, these two industries are in opposite fields. I think this aspect is one of Ireland’s strength. Moreover, his beautiful singing and Ireland’s many beautiful songs made an impression on me. I want to listen to his songs one more time.

I’m so lucky that I got a chance to see this special performance. The performance reminded me of the day that I joined a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Toronto. Everyone wore green clothes. That was one of my best days in Canada. Also, the song that he played on the Mandolin is a favorite for me. His songs resonated with me.

I feel this lesson isn’t only a lesson, it’s more like a concert with some introduction of the singer’s hometown. Through today’s lesson, I really think the world is so big and we should see it while we’re alive. Ireland was just a European country for me before, it’s far away and it seems that I would probably never have a chance to go there, nor to places like Africa and Iceland. But these lessons let me see people from different countries, who speak English but also their own languages. I feel closer to those different but wonderful cultures and I’d love to experience a different life while I’m young.

I really enjoyed Mr. Brian Cullen’s presentation about Ireland and his singing on the stage. He has a warm voice, so I think he has an amazing voice for ballads. I was surprised about they raise a lot of cattle in Ireland, more than Ireland’s population. And I also wonder why they don’t develop the seafood industry because Ireland is surrounded by ocean, in particular, the Atlantic Ocean’s warm current goes by Ireland. I think Ireland is an amazing country I will go there if I have a chance.

Thank you for your presentation. It was very interesting and funny. We could learn a lot of things about the culture of Ireland funny and interactive way. And I think, one of the most representative elements of a culture in the music; we could listen and enjoy directly music from Ireland, helping us to understand the tradition and history in a better way. Thank you for your music.

Today Mr. Cullen told us about Ireland with Irish songs. To be honest, I didn’t know about Ireland except for Guinness Beers. But when I listened and sang the Irish songs, I had a nostalgic feeling. Ireland has its own culture of course, like original music instruments and the Irish language, but nostalgia for one’s hometown is common feeling all over the world, I think.
