In today’s class, we share our opinions. It’s interesting to know what other people think. I heard other group’s presentation about Ms. Yoshimura. When I heard her speech, I only thought she can speak Japanese well and she is an attractive person. However, in the group’s speech, they said that after they heard her speech they thought they should try to be kind to foreigners. So what I want to say is that I need to focus on what is said, not just on the atmosphere. Thank you for today’s class.

Through discussion and presentation, I could review great lectures in the past. I belong to British and American studies, so I have many a chance to share my opinion in a class. However since today’s member was unusual for me, I could discuss with a new feeling. The presentation which I listened was “How to study English (Enjoy & effective)”. They raised 4 points: watching a movie in English, listening to western music, reading an English book and talking with friends in English. After I listened to their presentation, I felt I want to develop my English skills, especially listening and speaking skills. These ways are best ways. I want to try as much as I possibly can.

I thought that discussion would be more difficult if we had just listened to a lecture. This is because Japanese tend not to offer their opinion freely. But it was not true. We could share our ideas and had a good time. And I was also glad to hear the opinions from the European students. They couldn’t understand why Japanese don’t tell people opinion candidly. I often hear this opinion on TV, however, it was my first time to hear it directly. From this discussion, I can imagine how tough it is for us to learn a lot of cultures including ones which I have yet to hear of !

Our group discussed about Ms. Victoria Yoshimura’s speech. My opinion about how to “fit in” with Japanese people is to learn about and try to understand Japanese people first. If you don’t try to understand us, you will never be able to know how to “fit in”. Most foreigners, for example, thin that Japanese are too shy, but in Japan it is not bad to be shy. Also, we have the word “enryo” in Japanese. Maybe it is a little difficult for foreigners to understand, but it’s considered a good thing in Japan. So, again I think that in order to “fit in” with Japanese, you need to know about and try to understand the Japanese way of thinking. And this was mostly our group’s solution.

I learned that the English education system is different from country to country. One school in China has many classes. Many students are separated by English ability. However, the students who have a good ability of English but don’t have eagerness or don’t speak English willingly are also sort into the low level classes. Japanese people are shy person so we would be sorted into the low level classes!! We would be disadvantaged only because we are shy!! So I decided to overcome my shyness and I want to tale part in a good class if I go to China.

We discussed about Benefits and Drawbacks of an International School Education in Nagoya. At first, I thought I am not a global citizen because I would love to be that but my two friends who went to International Schools look more like global people. However, everyone in the other group answered: I think I am a global citizen. I was surprised and convinced by their opinion. They think that we already try to be a global person and study about other countries, and accept other countries’ cultures, so we are global citizens. I recovered my confidence.

I had never discussed in English as enthusiastically as I did in today’s class.. I want to thank my fiends. We exchanged our ideas and got closed before the class started.

’s presentation. We discussed the 2nd question from the worksheet, “What advice do you have for foreign students about fitting in with Japanese people?”. It was interesting and new to me. I answered, “They can watch, carefully, how Japanese people behave”. All the other members of my group except me, were international students. I hoped o could help them adapt to the lifestyle in Japan.

Today’s our group topic was English lesson in China, Japan, and Indonesia. Because our group has 3 international students and we wanted to compare English lessons in each of our countries. Which is interesting, all of these countries have few oral communication classes or no oral communication class, but Speaking skills of English are very different. I think that is because of the national characteristics in each of those countries. Chinese and Indonesian people are used to speaking a lot, but Japanese people are usually ashamed to talk. So even if in Japanese high schools have at least one foreign teacher, their English does not improve because they are afraid to talk with them.

Our group very impressed about Victoria Yoshimura- a woman tried to do to become Japanese Buddhist Priest. And because we have different backgrounds, we decided to do presentation about differences between Japanese meals and those from other countries. We also watched a presentation about Multilingual Societies. It is more flexible to fit in with other countries and much easier to acquire other languages. But, it is difficult to be mature in any languages, and it makes user feel the difficulty of knowing how to use the languages.

Today’s class was amazing. It’s so nice to have a chance to share your own thoughts and experiences with other students. I felt such inspiration! We had an interesting discussion with some Japanese students about their culture and society. What I realized was that even if young Japanese people tend to change their habits from looking up to Western culture, there is something deeper, something in their blood that they can’t overcome. And I think this is what makes Japan such an exceptional country.
