“Why do we learn English?”
              Mr. Yamamoto told us a new way of to teach English. The way is defined by 3 points. First, sounds to letter, second input to output, third, outline to detail.  The method is great to learn English. But it’s not good for passing the university examination. Why do we learn English? My reason for learning English is to communicate with foreign people, but also to enter university when I was high school student. This is a problem. If I learn English Mr. Yamamoto’s way, I can’t study for the entrance exam! But if I learn the old way, I can’t develop my skills enough to communicate with foreign people. I want to solve the problem by changing the entrance exams.

Your method of teaching English is completely different from the ordinary one at Japanese secondary schools. It can brush up students’ English ability, particularly speaking ability.  However, I think it has a negative effect as well. From one point of view, the introvert in a class may not willingly participate in the course, which possibly leads to them developing a bad image towards English. In my opinion, it is really difficult to encourage shy people to perform in front of a large audience. It would be better to have small groups retells first.

To be honest, I was surprised to hear that the speaker conducts his lessons in English. In most Japanese high schools, English is taught in Japanese, mostly because of the students’ insufficient ability to understand English. So, I instantly thought, “How did he know that students would be able to cope with the lessons?” What does he do when some students weren’t able to? Nevertheless, I, in fact, agree that English should be taught in English. Yes, it may be hard for the students at first, but I’m sure it will be one reason why they‘d want to strive harder to learn English. In addition, I think Japanese schools should teach students English in their earlier years. In japan, students learn Japanese in their 1st grade of junior high school. I think, if they start it from elementary school, it will be easier for them to pronounce and memorize English words.

After the presentation, I wondered do the classes which follow the three principles in English teaching reflect the results of the students’ tests in that school. Probably the answer is it does. However, how about in the other schools? Although I totally agree with the principles and think that this class is the best way for students to learn English, it seems English levels of students in the video were already high. So, I would like to test this and do it with other students whose English levels are lower.

Thank you for your presentation. It was so nice. I think your method of teaching English is very good. However, it depends on whether the students can understand English. Some students, who I learned with in my high school, were not good at English and couldn’t understand English. If there are some students who couldn’t understand, I think we can’t say today’s method is a good way to teach English. And also I think not all teachers can do the classes in English. I know teachers know well about English, but some English teachers who I met can’t speak fluently. However, I think every teacher should be able to speak fluently.

“English lectures for Global perspective and communication”

’ve always been interested in teaching English to Japanese students because I felt that the system of English teaching in Japan was not very good. However, after the presentation, I learned that it isn’t the system that was having problems but the teachers. Many teachers don’t know how to teach English in English. Mr. Yamamoto’s method was very interesting as it isn’t the method that I was taught. It gives students a chance to express themselves in English which is something that ordinary high schools don’t have. I hope that this method will be used more in high schools.

I thought that how to study English is important. When I was in junior high school, I used a dictionary when I found words which I didn’t know. Therefore, I couldn’t remember English words so much. However, if I had met Mr. Yamamoto and if I hadn’t used the dictionary and guessed the meanings, I could have remembered the word’s meaning more easily. Also, how to teach is important. I thought because if a teacher says “open your textbook to the page…” students will concentrate on that page and they won’t listen to the teacher’s explanation. In addition, I thought that teachers who teach English should speak in English. My high school teacher didn’t speak English in the class so much. So I didn’t get used to listening to English. I think speaking skills are more important than grammatical skills. So Japanese schools should observe the law and adopt epoch making classes. Practical English is most important I think.

I think the presentation is very interesting and helpful to me, because I am studying English by remembering the vocabularies and grammars which I have learned in senior high school or high school. But I don’t know how I can remember those vocabularies quickly. In class, I don’t know how I can hear and say but after school I have to remember these words by writing again and again. I think it’s very slowly.

              After I heard Mr. Yamamoto, I think I should have to think about the methods of studying firstly. And I want to ask some advices about the methods of English studying from Mr. Roger and Mrs. Andrea. Thank you very much.

I’m glad that I got a chance to hear his presentation. When I was in high school, our English teacher gave me lesson all in English, but she always asked us to read and translate into Japanese, just like Mr. Yamamoto said that many teachers do. It was so boring that many students fell asleep. So I wish I had been Mr. Yamamoto’s student when I was in high school. If I had been, I’m sure my English’s skill would have improved much more. I know it is so hard for English teachers to teach English in English. I hope the government will give them more kind of help to give hotter lessons. Also, I’m hoping students will get more chances to SPEAK English in class because we have almost no chance to speak English. I want Mr. Yamamoto to find good ways to solve this problem next.

I think the English teaching method from Yamamoto sensei is so innovative, as it is different from usual Japanese teachers when teaching English. The important things from his point of view are Oral Introduction and Retelling. They cover 3 principles in English teaching and also 4 skills in learning. Somehow, I think his method is already applied in my country, especially in the English course. When I entered high school, the teacher was a native speaker. But in school, only oral introduction was introduced by my school teacher. I didn’t experience any retelling when I was a high school student. In my opinion, it can be a new method to apply in my country, so that the student can practice more about English.

Today, I’m so glad to hear Mr. Yamamoto’s speech about the skills of learning English. It’s true that many teachers now don’t follow the principles, as Mr. Yamamoto just described. For example, I’m Chinese. In China, we study English by learning new words and new grammar. We focus on improving our listening skills, increasing our vocabulary, and training to do some reading comprehension. It’s just only input, there is no output for us. Or it’s just a little, like we read an article aloud. But we don’t do it too much.

I think it’s very important to have students speak English, maybe there are some mistakes, but it’s output for us. And I think it’s good to watch English movies or listen to English music as ways to learn English, and we need to repeat the sentences we like.

              Thank you for your presentation, Mr. Yamamoto. I have never thought about how to teach English because I have thought teacher is right and all I have to do is to do what they said. So today, I was really surprised when Mr. Yamamoto said “Japanese teacher don’t know how to conduct classes in English”. As he said I often translate English into Japanese when I was a high school student because teachers said to do so. But it was no good, I realized by listening to speech. There are procedures to learn English more efficiently— I learned today. I’m happy to know this. Thank you very much!
