I am interested in International Cooperation, because I’ve been to several developing countries to do volunteer work. I agree with her that we should be the part of the world to solve the problems because they are not only the problems others, but also ours. I was worried that international cooperation might pose a risk of breaking the culture of another country, but I was glad to have an answer from Ms. Kimura that JICA supports exactly what is needed. I have had a dream for a long time that I want to join JOCV in the future. And this feeling became stronger because of Ms. Kimura’s talk.

This was the first time for me to meet a person who works at JICA, so I was very impressed. When I was a high school student, I was thinking about going abroad as a volunteer and I found the organization called JICA. In my view, this job is very satisfying, but also contains risk. I didn’t know 80% of countries in the world are still developing, that means the power of developed countries is still required. The Japanese government might have many reasons to promote these projects. I think one reason is to show that Japanese contribute to other people and the other reason is to be superior to such countries. Of course, Japan has a lack of resources, so Japan wants to develop good relationships with developing countries.

Actually, I don’t know about JICA so much. I knew that JICA is the organization that does international cooperation in developing countries. I thought it is necessary to increase the number of such organizations all over the world. Developed countries, like the USA and Japan, should cooperate to support the development of developing countries. I think that the poverty in developing countries will not be solved by developed countries giving money to developing countries. It is important that developed countries supply technology and knowledge.

Today’s guest works at JICA. I learned about JICA in another class. So, I was looking forward to today. Ms. Kimura has worked in a lot of countries for JICA. I’m envious of her life style. I think that I want to work as like her in the future. It was a good point that there was a time for us to think about world problems. And the quiz was nice for us to learn a lot of new things. There are a lot of problems in the world, so I want to get a job which is concerned with them. The handout for today’s class is very good because there is a lot of useful information, so I want to read it again at my home. Thank you.

It was great opportunity to listen to a JICA staff’s talk. At the beginning of Ms. Kimura’s talk, I was really surprised that 80% of all countries are developing countries. The figure is higher than I expected. Then, while she spoke, she asked us, “Why do you think Japan does International Cooperation?” I considered that it seems part of the government’s performance towards worlds, but I think the true answer might be due to a desire to reciprocate. For example, when we experienced difficulty, like the Great earthquake in East Japan, we were helped by many many people around the world. So, the real reason might be “give and take”. I noticed Ms. Kimura’s work is important and necessary.

Helping the development of a country is a hardship, but it must be a rewarding job. Not knowing about other countries may cause people living in the developing country to feel that they are just being imposed upon by the developed countries. Therefore, people who belong to JICA have to understand other countries and the cultures carefully. In the future, more and more developing countries will get knowledge of new technology thanks to volunteers and organizations like JICA. I would be honored if I could be a member of the organization.

Thank you for your presentation. I belong to an international volunteer circle, but I’ve never worked overseas. Actually, I was afraid of working abroad. I’m Japanese and I’m used to the normal quality of life in Japan. Unless I go abroad, I’ll never experience any language difficulty. I thought I couldn’t deal with anything overseas. However, from your answer to one student’s question, I caught your words, “Human beings are human beings wherever you are and whenever you work”. I had a very limited view and I was afraid of what I should experience. I thought having such lack of vision is very poor and sad. I want to change my thinking and make the world better.

I don’t know much about developing countries like some in Africa. So, I was surprised that South Sudan was recognized as an independent country in 2011. Ms. Kimura asked a question, “What would you like to do to make a better world?” I think I have to learn and know about developing countries to make better world. If we don’t know about them, we can’t do anything. So, we have to learn about them first.

Japan is one of the richest and most developed countries in the world. In this era of globalization, it is important for economic powers to aid other countries that are in need. Otherwise, the distribution of resources and happiness will continue to get more and more unbalanced. Consequently, lack of resources will cause a lot of big problems such as hunger, disputes over food, etc. So, in order to pursue world peace, countries that can afford to should contribute to peace voluntarily.

At first, I was surprised at how much money Japan gives to developing countries. In the handouts, Japan loans a lot of money to them. From where does that money come? In addition, I have been wondering why the Japanese government does not focus on the domestic problems as hard as the oversea ones, since I heard that Japan gives huge support to developing countries. I think Japan is trying to establish its high status or fame on the international stage by showing Japan’s level of support. I am not willing to criticize the ODA, but in my opinion, Japan should spend more on developing japan. On the other hand, I think sharing knowledge or skills is good. There will be not only what we give developing countries, but also what they give us. Young people should participate in any activity held by the ODA, I think.
