To know that today’s guest graduated from this university, so I thought that although I’m not talented enough, if I decided myself to studying various languages and absorb lots of knowledge, I wonder whether I’ll be able to get a job as an interpreter-guide. I’ve wanted to have a career using English for a long time. Through the presentation, I was especially interested in how the translation differs depending on the time, place, and occasion. For instance, regarding tones, it is possible for the message to be happy or cold depending on a context. I realize that we also need common sense to be a translator for above point, and know Japan very well.

I really enjoyed today’s presentation because I’m interested in the job of interpreter-guide. I learnt that interpreting is not just replacing words, it is delivering messages. I think interpreter-guides need high language skills and a lot of knowledge and the mindset of “Omotenashi”, so it is a very hard job. However, at the same time, I think it is a wonderful, attractive, and challenging job. I want to get a job using English in Japan, so I will never forget her words “Dreams come true if you take action, take opportunity!” She told me something important for my future.

I’ve been interested in becoming an interpreter-guide, so I was looking forward to today’s lecture and really enjoyed it. Recently, I almost gave up on the dream to become an interpreter-guide because I considered getting the license as part of job hunting. I thought I have to get it while I’m at university, but now I don’t have much time to study for that. However, Mrs. Kato said that she got the license after she got married and gave birth! So now, thanks to her, I’ve got a dream again. I will never forget her words, “Dream comes true if you take action and take the opportunity.”

Currently, I’m taking an interpretation class. In the class, I do simultaneous translations and consecutive translations. However, today’s presentation was about being a conference interpreter and I found it really interesting and it attracted me so much! It was great to hear that the Japanese government is focusing on it. Right now, I want to have a career related to cars, English and if possible, German, too. I thought that being a conference interpreter would be nice. In the rest of my university life, I will brush up my English and Germany too! Also, I’m timid like Mrs. Kato, so I’ll strive as much as I can and take as many opportunities as I can! I learned so many things from today’s presentation.

Through Mrs. Kato’s presentation, I learned that there were many kinds of interpreters. And also, I was surprised that we have lots of opportunities to work as an interpreter, especially in Aichi, because there are many world-famous companies around here. Since I thought to be an interpreter was quite difficult, it was a good news for me, and I have an interest in that job. Moreover, I thought it is interesting that it is important to serve “Omotenashi” to foreigners without imposing and without indulging, however it is also important to help them understand our culture. I thought it is difficult. So, I realized that an interpreter needs not only language skills, but also other skills to connect people very well.

It was a really valuable presentation for me because I’m trying to be an interpreter. I had thought that if I had a good language ability, it means I could be a good interpreter. Through her presentation, however, I’ve realized my opinion was wrong. To be an interpreter, I need not only great language skills but also knowledge about our own, and foreign cultures. In particular, it’s difficult for me to tell foreign people about Japanese culture. So, as she said, I’m going to take action to become an interpreter!

I’m very happy to listen to the speech of an interpreter. I’m interested in interpreter’s work, but I know that it is very difficult to become an interpreter. After I entered this university, I almost gave up on the dream I had when I was a junior high school student. But from Mrs. Kato’s presentation, I feel that “Dreams come true.” I realized that studying a lot, taking action, and keeping dreams are very important. So I want to keep my dream and want to be like her.

I think being an interpreter is hard work because it requires the ability of language and so on. I’m from Mie. Next year, a summit meeting will be held in Mie. I had a very big opportunity to take part in it as a volunteer who guides foreign people around the city. My mother recommended me to participate in it. However, I worried if I could take part in or not because my English skill is not high. So, finally I decided not to participate. But now, I deeply regret my decision. This was a big chance for me to improve my skill and I think it would have been and important experience in my life. Mrs. Kato said, “If you take an action, dreams come true.” So, I believe this phrase and I want to take action before I regret it.

Thank you for your presentation. I didn’t know about interpreters who specialize in interpreting for conferences. However, I became interested in this job through listening to Mrs. Kato’s presentation. Now I don’t have enough vocabulary, so it is all I can do to translate from English to Japanese without thinking about TPO. So, I was really surprised to know owing to feelings and situations. Finally, I want to achieve my dream, so I’m going to take action. Thank you very much.
