This presentation was a good chance to know how the work in a newspaper office is done and hard it is. I was surprised that to create a morning’s newspaper, employees have to arrive for work at 3 or 4 a.m., so they don’t have enough sleep. From today’s presentation, however, I was able to understand it is really a rewarding job from her speech and her satisfied expression. I’d like to have a worthwhile job in the future.

I was very surprised at her story. Being a correspondent is so hard. I didn’t imagine there was such a hard job behind newspaper articles until today. I think it’s very difficult to interview and collect information in English and then write articles in Japanese. I really respect her. After listening to her story, I thought I had better pay attention to news and read a newspaper. I really enjoy her story. I wondered whether she is afraid of going to crime scenes.

I found today’s lecture interesting. I have always had a great longing for working outside Japan. When I listened to Mrs. Osada, I was surprised how difficult her job is. It was such a valuable time to hear the story about what was happening behind the news from Mrs. Osada, who actually was there. When I heard that Mrs. Osada was the one who first broke the news about Japanese cleaning up the garbage at the World Cup in Brazil, I was so surprised. I knew about this news from Twitter. I just couldn’t believe that today I actually met the person who first broke the news about Japanese cleaning up the garbage.

I really enjoyed her presentation today. Even it was for four years, that time must have been really busy challenging and tiring. I was so surprised to hear that there were only four correspondents from Chunichi Shinbun at that time, but they were covering almost every field. I cannot imagine how hard it was and how much knowledge she was required to have in order to work as a correspondent. I have been getting the news only from the websites, so I think I should read more newspapers to see more detailed articles, like the ones she used to write.

Today’s guest speaker was from Chunichi Shinbun. It is very close to us. I’m very interested in her background. I didn’t know that Chunichi Shinbun has an office in another country. Her life in New York sounds busy but very exciting. I think that there are some difficult problems, but it is important to enjoy the “difficulty”. Lastly, I want to pay more attention to international news, and what’s happening around us. I never want to forget that “we are living on the same island.” Thank you.

She has to go wherever any unexpected things, such as problems, typhoons, and crimes happen. I just watch what is happening on TV, so I have no thought about the people go there. Thanks to those who go there and tell us stories about the event, we know more exactly about what is happening. I want to go to study in France, but I am so afraid of terrorism. However, by listening to her describe such flightning crimes, I have a chance to know how kind people are, as she met three gentle guys. Also, I found out that journalist is a job not for giving people the news, but also to help people. I will try to watch more international news and to be more aware of current events.

She is a great worker. I can’t say anything more. And I was surprised that she is a mother too! I want to work all over the world like her, but I felt that I would have to give up marriage and being a mother to work. By the way, I can’t understand why the U.S. and other countries don’t ban to keep or use guns! I use the BBC app, and when I see “the U.S. & Canada” section. There is always a headline: shooting, shooting, shooting, Mr. Obama, shooting…!

Print media are an important part of our lives. We can get various kinds of information about what is happening inside or outside of Japan. Because there are so many newspaper companies in the world, even if they are writing about the same topics, they could report it from a different angle. At that time, for me it’s hard to distinguish which one is telling us the truth. When we read an article, it only takes us a couple of minutes, but there is a huge process behind the article. Today’s lecture makes me think being a journalist is such a tough thing.

I don’t read newspapers usually because I check the news every day on the train when I go to school. But, actually, I know newspapers are very good to read because they are more abundant in information and have better quality than Internet sources do. Although online media is quicker to give up-to-the-minute news, I don’t think newspapers fall behind them considering their quality. I think we can learn a lot more in newspapers than any other source. If I had kept reading a newspaper on the train rather than swiping my cellphone, I would be so much wiser!

News is something we can avoid despite modern technology even today, which it is surprising if we consider how connected the world is. We should read the news because aside from leaning things we are more conscious of the good or bad things surrounding us. Just because something occurs on the other side of the world does not mean we should not care, we are one human race so we should be more empathic and also value the people who work so hard in keeping us updated.
