感想

Today’s class was a chance to review Japan and I found three new things. Firstly, when I heard his self-introduction I felt sorry for Japanese lack of knowledge of Mexico. I think Japanese people should be more interested in foreign countries. In addition, Manuel mentioned “foreigners” as a bad point in Japan. I was shocked and thought it was a big problem. I think we, Japanese should not treat people who come from other countries as “foreigners”. The government should realize how people from other countries feel when they come in Japan. Japan should be more international. Second, I found a problem with salaries. Japanese salary is paid not by how good workers are, but by how long they work. It is a big problem. So, I want the government to improve it and I got to want to work in the U.S.A. Finally, I noticed the greatest power we have is our interest because Manuel learned English and Japanese by playing the video games he loved.

The education system of Mexico is totally different to that of Japan. In Japan, students in the same grade are almost the same age, but because it’s possible to skip a year in Mexico, there will be different ages of students in the same classroom. This surprised me the most from today’s lecture. Also, the way he learned languages impressed me a lot. Not because of the fine studying environment or text books, but because of the motivation he has and he just keeps doing it.

Until Mr. Medina showed us what some Japanese people he had met thought about Mexicans, I thought all Mexicans could speak English. I have 3 Mexican friends and they can speak it very well, so I was surprised to hear most actually can’t. Before entering university, he had never thought about Japan and he encountered Japanese at first by chance. I think meeting something and someone new is very exciting and important because it often gives me new ideas. For me, learning a new language is exciting but also very difficult and I cannot imagine how difficult learning new languages by myself would be. I always thought I needed people to teach me but his talk changed my mind. You can learn from anything around you such as manga and video games. I have some chances to read manga written in other languages so I need to try it.

Today’s presentation was very interesting for me because Mr. Gonzalez told us about a lot of experiences that he had as a foreign student in Japan. His sentence, “I didn’t realize the good points of Mexico until I came to Japan” was so impressive and I hope I will feel like him when I study abroad. And also, I was surprised that he knew very well the imagines of Mexico that Japanese people hold. Like him, I want to know about my country objectively.

Through this lesson, I became very attuned to the feelings of the speaker. For example, Japan is a safe country for people to live in, but Japanese are afraid of being close, though I have only lived here just for one month. I am surprised that I have never heard any car horns until now. It’s a big difference between China and Japan. Of course there are lots of differences that make me begin to realize that if you don’t leave your home country you will never see the strengths and weaknesses that your home country has. Finally, I want to quote this sentence: “There is no perfect country, but by knowing our differences we can strengthen our bonds.”

From today’s presentation, I know that we can learn foreign languages without textbooks. I noticed leaning a foreign language through comics or video games seems to be very interesting, enjoyable, and efficient! I want to try that way of leaning a language. Also, I was shocked to know that some Japanese people discriminate against foreigners. I try to judge people by their character or their mind. I want us to understand each other and to communicate with a lot of foreign people.

I’m very surprised to hear that Mr. Medina Gonzalez studied Japanese using a Japanese dictionary. Even I rarely use a Japanese dictionary because it’s difficult to use and, because of the small words, it’s hard to read. I also started to become interested in tacos. I have never eaten this food before and when the screen was full of the image of the tacos, the Mexican students seated next to me reacted very happily, so I want to try them someday.

I like his words, “Never give up on your dreams.” He told us, a small chance will definitely change our life, like when he started to study Japanese just because he loves games and he wanted a challenge. I also want to chase my dream even it takes time. “Your dream will end when you quit.” I agree with him!

I figured out some clues about how to get rid of stereotypes when we meet foreign people. First, talk to them about many things and try to get to know about them. Second, playing games is one of effective measures because students all over the world are interested in them and they can share some kinds of games. Lastly, get out of Japan and see your own country from abroad like Manuel.

Thank you for your very interesting presentation. I agree with your opinion that we need to get a chance to see our country from the outside because in Japan there are so many people who don’t have the experience to be in foreign countries. I think it means that a lot of Japanese are ignorant about foreigners and foreign countries. Being ignorant is very rude to foreigners and sometime it may be a form of discrimination. When I was a child, was in France, but many French told me “Hey Chinese! Don’t come here!” It was very sad, but when I look back now I realize that almost all of the French who told me that didn’t know very much about Japan, and didn’t know the difference between Japan and China. From these experiences and your presentation, I want to have much information and experience in foreign countries.
