Before today’s class, I knew almost nothing about Iran and all I knew about Iran was that it is far away, and that it seemed like a dangerous country. But my impression has totally changed. Now I have come to be interested in the women in Iran. Even though they do not have many rights and freedom to do what they want to do, they are still working hard to fight for them. So, I was quite moved by that. And also when the speaker was reading the poem with the ‘ud, although I know nothing about the music and what it meant, I could feel that her voice was beautiful, powerful, and really beyond any description.

For me, it was the first time to experience Persian culture. Though it was kind of hard to understand the poem, even when translated to English, I found it very emotional and sweet. With the sound of the ‘ud, it gets became even nicer. I really enjoyed the music and poems. I wish I could have such a sweet voice like her. And I was surprised that some Persian instruments are the origin of today’s instrumentals like the guitar and piano.

In today’s lecture, I got a fresh perspective from her talk. Since I didn’t know anything about Iran, it was nice to hear from Nahid. Her lecture made me think a lot. Especially, when she told us that in some countries, including Iran, people cannot listen to the music they want, and they also cannot wear whatever they want. I notice that we Japanese are in extreme luxury. When Nahid said that those people are fighting for their liberty, I realized the importance of what she said. It was a really nice opportunity to have contact between different cultures.

I was impressed with her voice. She said she didn’t do anything special to learn singing, but the song was great and her voice is beautiful. However, I was surprised that in Iran, women performing solo is forbidden. Women in many countries perform solo. I hope that Persian women eventually also perform solo and are allowed to sing in public. Finally, we sang together. The pronunciation is different, so it was a little difficult to sing, but enjoyable.

I was totally attracted by the mystery of Iran. And I learned some things about Iran that I didn’t know before. For example, Persian seems like the Arabic language while their pronunciations are different. And Iranians drink black tea, don’t eat pork, etc. And I was impressed that women in Iran are fighting for their rights and freedom, so that their dress style became more relaxed now.

I had no knowledge of Iran until today, so it was very new and interesting for me. I had the image of the Iran-Iraq War, so I didn’t even think that there would be so many beautiful places and nature. And the difference in climate between the northern and the southern part of Iran surprised me. Ms. Nikzad said that some music is prohibited, so I wondered if movies, TV shows, and books are prohibited too or not. And also about the scarves, she said that women can take them off at home. But how about someone else’s home. Can you take it off there? And what if foreigners go to Iran, do they also have to wear scarves? I liked the phrase “Let’s enjoy the present.”

How many things do we take for granted? As a Mexican I’ve never experienced any censorship related to the music I listen to. I really enjoy music, so it was so surprising to hear how hard is to be a woman who enjoys music and to not be able to sing by yourself or listen to anything that has nothing to do with religion or poetry. Once again I get to open my mind to new perspectives which makes me wiser in understanding other cultures, which now-a-days is so important in order to progress without forcing our ideals or others.

I really enjoyed listening to Nahid’s presentation and Persian music. Before I listened to her presentation, I did not know much about Iran and, like she had said, I was a little confused about the difference between Iran and Iraq. So, it was very nice to know about Iran. In her presentation, she said that women have to cover their hair, they can’t wear clothes they want or listen to the music they want. When I heard this, I felt very sorry for them and that I am really happy that I can do these things. But I was very glad when I heard they are fighting for their rights. I want them to keep fighting and have more freedom. Many of the instruments she showed us were very unique. It was very nice to hear Nahid’s presentation.

From today’s lecture, I learned that we should appreciate that we can sing whatever we want. I’ve known that there were some people who can’t wear what they want in this world, however, I didn’t know that there were some people who can’t even sing what they want. It is a pity because in Iran, there are lots of wonderful musical instruments. I could learn the good points of my country through learning about countries’ cultures.

First of all, I have to thank Ms. Nikzad because it was a special experience to listen to Persian music live and to know about Iran. The reason why I felt Iran is a special is that we, Japanese people, have no chance to know about how Iran is. In addition, in a few days, in soccer Japan plays Iran. So, it makes me feel more special to know about Iran, and interested in Iran. I was surprised by how many instruments were born in Iran and how similar to Japan Iran is. I was moved at the meaning of a poem “We enjoy the present we live in.” This made me decide not to care about the past or the future too much. Today’s class was so valuable for me.
