Andrea’s story was interesting for me. I knew that there are a lot of mass shootings in America. However, I didn’t know that forty mass shooting incidents have happened in schools this year. I was shocked to listen to that. I wonder why so many mass shooting happen in U.S. and why using guns is allowed?

I’m a student from another university. So I’m so excited to listen to the coordinator’s and guest speaker’s talks. And I’m really surprised how smart Aichi Prefectural University students are. I enjoyed Andrea and Alun’s stories. Andrea’s family live in many countries. So I’m envious that she has opportunities to visit many countries. But she is sometimes so lonely… Alun’s story taught me that it is important to have many opportunities both good and bad. But sometimes I can’t speak English, so I’ll try to listen more carefully.

I was impressed with Andrea’s phrase “If you study English, you can take part in a discussion”, because I realized that English was not just a language, but an important communication tool. Moreover, I like Alun’s phrase “Do it or quit”. If we don’t do our best, it is better not to do something. So, I will always do my best.

Both speeches were quite impressive. Andrea’s speech made me rethink how important language is, not only to communicate with people but also to gain knowledge and know what’s happening outside of Japan. And about Alun’s speech, it’s probably the best story I’ve heard this year. Actually, I am hewing some problems and worries about my studies now, but after his story, I think I will be able to get over them.

I could obtain various knowledge about America by listening to Andrea’s talk. I would like to know about the history and influence of guns in America more and more. Moreover, ‘perspective’ in Alun’s talk gave me a strong impression. I have never experienced ‘near death’ incidents, but I found how happy ‘the usual life’ is. I would like to do my best to study English, learning a range of information and having various perspectives.

First, although it’s hard for me to be living in another country without friends or family, after this class, I think that I also can use networks to communicate with them. That’s fine. Then, I learned that it’s important to have a great perspective on life. Between continuing or quitting, I choose to continue.

I was surprised to know that in the U.S. There has been more than 40 gun shootings at schools. It is very scary to hear that. I wonder why that happens. I think that the way they are able to get guns easily is a point. But I think you have to do something for the mental health of the shooters. And even if the U.S. stops selling guns it wouldn’t help unless the state helps out with mental care.

I was very interested in topic of guns. I know that there are many problems related to guns in the U.S., but countries like Japan ban using and selling or buying guns, so it is sometimes hard to imagine why Americans want to have a gun. Before, my friend (an American) told me, “We buy a gun to protect ourselves. If a robber came to your house with a gun, what do you think?” It’s a sound argument, but I thought that if the U.S. bans guns like Japan, it will decrease the number of deaths due to crime using guns.

I personally think guns in the U.S. should definitely be illegal. I’ve seen a survey about “rate of gun using in crimes”. In most crimes guns were used to threaten others. In my opinion, guns are evil but maybe it’s too late to ban or reduce guns in the U.S. because of the giant gun industry.

Listening to such an unbelievable story makes you reflect on your own life, I’ve wondered how many times we stop ourselves from doing something. If we weren’t afraid of failure what would we be able to do?
