Thanks to his lecture, my view toward teaching English has changed. I have learned that teacher's roles are not to instruct sophisticated methods for students to acquire a language, but to encourage students to study by themselves. In addition, as a teacher we should provide a good environment which makes students speak English and have confidence during the class, and consequently we can foster a student's competence.

The topic of education was very interesting for me because I take the classes for becoming a teacher. I often think about how to teach English, so today's speech gave me good ideas. In his speech, I was impressed by the words "Compete against your potentials." When I was a high school student, my English teachers always paid attention to entrance examinations. They often said to us "Your friends are rivals," and made us compete against each other to improve our grades. However, I felt very bad for their attitude, so I thought Mr. Ota's opinion is very good for children. I want to teach English to give children inspiration in the future. It was a good lecture.

Today’s lecture is a very interesting topic for me because I’m trying to get a teacher’s license of English. When I was a junior high school student, I felt dissatisfied with my English class because our English teacher taught only grammar and how to translate English sentences into Japanese. I wanted to talk and speak English; in short I wanted to communicate with other students in English. I am not sure if I’ll become an English teacher or not, but the most memorable thing is that I should compare myself to what I was not to other people.

When I watched the video at the beginning, I was surprised because the English class was taught entirely in English. Both the teacher and the students only used English and they seemed to enjoy the class very much. When I was a high school student, I learned English almost entirely in Japanese. I read the textbooks in English, but I did not have any opportunities to communicate with my classmates in English, so I envied the students on the video. Now, I have not decided where to work in the near future, but if I have a chance to teach English, I want to motivate my students as I was motivated to learn English more by Mr. Ota today.

I think it is a good idea to promote English education from an early stage, because when I was a junior high school student, I didn’t take classes like Communicative English where I could speak English during class. I only read English textbooks and studied grammar. However, I’m afraid that there may be a large gap between students who are good at English and students who are not by introducing this new method of education. Moreover, students who are not good at English may lose confidence by comparing themselves with students who are good at English.

I was motivated very much by his wonderful speech to both learn English and teach it. His speech is very easy to understand; slow, clear, he repeats important points using different words or examples and body language. But the thing that makes his speech most impressive is his passion and confidence, which is emphasized very often in his speech. His attitude appealed to me very much. Also, including me, APU has a lot of students who are interested in English teaching. So today’s lecture must have stimulated our thinking of the subject. Children feel happy and want to learn more by themselves in any studies, if they have confidence to do it. I’d love to be such a teacher in the future.

I can agree with his idea that we don’t have to compete with others, and the opponent must be ourselves. I have seen many people worried about their TOEIC score and CASEC or etc, just because they feel that they are inferior to others. And I heard some people say “I lost my confidence because he/she got higher points than me.” Therefore, I really think improving these thoughts could make students more confident.

This lecture made me consider Japanese education deeply because I’m taking a pedagogical class and I’m studying English education in Japan. When I was a student, I just studied for tests, to get good grades, or to pass the test to enroll at university. I don’t think it was a good way in terms of learning English to communicate with English speakers. So this lecture gave me some ideas on how to look at Japanese education deeply again! If I become an English teacher, I’ll try to teach in a communicative way which we were shown today!

Thank you for your great speech. First, I was impressed with his words; knowing English is one thing and using it is another. No matter how much knowledge about English you have, you can never be a good speaker of English unless you learn how to use it. This is applicable not only to learning languages, but also to almost everything we can learn. Also, we should have a positive opinion of ourselves. When we learn foreign languages, the more confident we are, the greater progress we will make. In addition, I learned that it is myself that I have to compare with or compete against. All of these things will make us a more autonomous learner.

Thank you for a wonderful presentation. This lecture was particularly interesting to me, because I learned English in England. I went to England when I was in year 4, and went to an English school. It was very challenging, but I managed to be able to communicate in around 3 years. It was also easy to keep my motivation up, as I could feel how my English was improving in daily life. However, I think that doing this in Japan could be difficult. Not many English teachers are confident in carrying the lesson out in English, and I believe we need more English classes to increase the time when students listen or speak English. I hope that this will work out so that more Japanese students will be more confident in using English.
