It was the first time for me to listen to a talk by a hotel staff member, so it was very interesting. I was surprised by the size of the hotel. Ms. Mochizuki said that she is a kind of a chief person, so I think working at a big hotel playing an important role is very difficult. She also said that there are a lot of customers who complain, so dealing with it well is tough, too. I become interested in working at a hotel though this kind of work requires a lot of special skills. I agree with Ms. Mochizuki in terms of what she said about awareness, so I try to watch other people and try to guess what they want when I work as a part time employee.

Actually, I work as a receptionist in a hotel in Nagoya, which is located in Fushimi. So, I could really understand Ms. Mochizuki’s lecture which was very interesting and helpful to me. When I work, I meet a lot of guests, and some of them are demanding. So, I have to say “No!!” to them, but saying no is a kind of taboo in my work. So, I am pursuing some solutions to deal with them. Thanks to her lecture, I found a solution which is suggesting another option. So, thank you very much.

Thank you for your lecture. Before I listened to your lecture, I regarded hotel work as easy. But I realized I was wrong. First, I was surprised at the number of customers in a day, which is hundreds of people. So, it is very busy. And, people working at reception are the face of the hotel. I was also surprised by the power of observation. In only forty seconds, there are many discoveries related to customers. The power of observation is very important to OMOTENASHI. I do a part time job related to service, so I will try to do what Ms. Mochizuki described! Thank you!

I think OMOTENASHI means bowing, using honorific words and paying attention to detail. Although this word might include many more meanings, I’d say these are the main points. I have a part-time job but not in hotel, so I actually take care of and try to do such things in my part-time job. To be honest, sometimes I think Japanese OMOTENASHI service is too much; however, this word represents Japanese unique and good points.

Thank you for your presentation. I learned that there are various kinds of jobs to be done by staff in order to make guests pleased. Though they are not easy tasks at all, it seems that doing those jobs make both staff and guests happy. How wonderful that is! Now that Japan was selected at the host country for the 2020 Olympics, more foreigners will come to Japan and use these accommodations. I didn’t know that Wi-Fi connections are less available in town, but I’m sure that foreigners will be surprised by Japanese hospitality and service at hotels. Also, I was impressed with the way she responds when she gets some demanding requests. I think it is one of the reasons for the high quality service at Japanese hotels.

Today’s speaker works at a hotel, there are many things I could feel sympathy with because I work at a restaurant. She said the best moment is when the guests are smiling at check out, I also have the same experience. I was very happy when the customer said the meal was very good and smiled. I think it is interesting that when the guests are satisfied, workers are also satisfied. She also said she has OMOTENASHI spirit. I was very surprised because my employer also said “Please have OMOTENASHI spirit.” Ms. Mochizuki’s job is harder than my job, but the basic spirit is the same in any customer relations job.

OMOTENASHI is one of the most difficult Japanese words to translate into foreign languages. It contains many Japanese connotations, so it is difficult to explain it to foreigners. Therefore, we have to make them feel a sense of OMOTENASHI by welcoming them warmly. Many foreigners think Japan is a kind country. In order to keep this image, we should prepare for the Tokyo Olympic to “MOTENASU” foreigners.

It was good to listen to this lecture because I also want to work at a hotel and if possible, I’m hoping to be a hotel concierge. I think hotel clerks have to remember a ton of guest’s names and faces. Actually, I’m not good with names and faces, so I must make a great effort. And, I’ve found “awareness” to be really important. When I joined an internship at a hotel, the manager there said “We don’t sit by and watch what’s happening, we try to act accordingly all the time, even in the most hectic and stressful situations.” That’s why “awareness” would be my challenge just for now.

What is “OMOTENASHI”? What does “OMOTENASHI” mean? Ms. Mochizuki mentioned it and I think it is important, too. We have to think about a customer’s desire. I have a part time job at a French restaurant. One day, a family came to eat dinner. Then, their grandparents hesitated to use a knife and fork. They were not used to be using them. So, I asked our chef to cut the steak before I served it. Finally, the grandparents ate all the dish. I was really happy.

When I watched the simple video, I learned what OMOTENASHI means. I learned that you should be very observant of everything and you should observe what people are doing and know what they want. I think this OMOTENASHI mindset is very important in the service industry. I thought that just sitting in a chair in a café and observing people is a good way to have an OMOTENASHI mindset. Since she mentioned that they go on business trips, I thought it was good to consider working in a hotel, too.
