It is difficult to teach English without speaking Japanese. I had a chance to teach 10-year-old students, but I used Japanese because they didn't understand my English and I didn't know how to make myself understood in English. Therefore, I think Mr. Yamamoto's teaching skill is so good. He knows how to teach English in English. It is true that Japan doesn't have so many good English teaches. I think it is important to train teachers well. I hope Japanese English education will be improved not only for the Tokyo Olympics.

I was very impressed with his presentation and his way of speaking. I studied abroad one year ago. So I know that Japanese students are not able to speak English well compared with students from other countries. I'm sure that that is because of the Japanese educational system. But, with his way of teaching English, we can be better English speakers. And one more thing, his way of speaking is completely different from typical Japanese people. He used his body to emphasize the important pats of his presentation. I want to imitate his way of speaking.

Last week, I gave a presentation in my English class about English education. So, I was really interested in today's lecture. I talked with my classmates about the disadvantages of English education at elementary school, and I thought English education should be started at high school. However, after listening to this lecture, I think there are some good points in early English education. Today's lecture changed my mind.

Through Mr. Yamamoto's lecture, I've learned a lot of things about how to teach English. English lessons in Senior High Schools tend to focus a lot on grammar and composition. This way of teaching English is likely to be boring for students. But, watching his videos of his teaching, I learned better ways to teach students in a more interesting and effective way. You don't have to focus on grammar, but teaching in other ways, students will learn not only the grammar but also skills in speaking and listening. I can't wait to practice that in my teacher training classes!

I don't like the Japanese English education system because students can't acquire proper English pronunciation and usage. In elementary school, Japanese teachers who are not professional English teachers teach English to students who are beginners of English. Moreover, students can't get English communication skills because they don't have any opportunities to speak English. I feel empathy with Mr. Yamamoto and the way he teaches. I wish I could have taken his class when I was a high school student.

Through this lesson, my view toward teaching English has changed. In conventional lessons, teachers lead students to study English. However, his lesson promotes them to take part in the class and motivates them. I think it's easy for teachers to compel students to study English, but it's difficult for teachers to encourage students to study English spontaneously. One of my goals is to become a teacher, so I would like to make every effort to motivate and entertain students.

Certainly, when I was in elementary school, my Japanese English teachers didn't seem to have enough skills to teach English to children. And, especially, their English pronunciation would turn me off at times because they had a terrible Japanese accent. In addition to that, I've doubted for ages if the English tests in elementary school or junior high school truly improve our English skills. In my opinion, I don't think so. There's no way you get 100 points just because you memorize a textbook ! I think that's nonsense. And, in the first place, the introverted national characteristic of the Japanese can be a big problem. Maybe, we should change attitudes towards English classes first of all.

It was a wonderful lecture. A few days ago, I discussed the English education in Japanese high schools in a class. I thought the English education which I took was not good because I did not have any opportunities to speak English. However, I could not come up with good solutions at that time. Today, after listening to his talk, I could solve my question, so I am very happy. His way of teaching English looked a lot of fun. If I could go back to being a high school student, I would really like to take his English class. I'm a university student, but I really enjoyed the English class taught by him.

English education, especially for elementary school students, is quite a curious topic for me because, actually, both of my parents are elementary school teachers. They are busy with a lot of work, such as preparing for classes and club activities in addition to all kinds of questionnaires. They go to their schools even on holidays! I suppose other teachers are in the same situation. But, the Japanese government requires them to be good teachers with good English skills even if they had not majored in English in university . This is quite a controversial problem.

A few weeks ago, I was faced with the same questions in one of my classes, such as "Should English classes at junior / senior high school be conducted in English or not?" When I heard the speaker's method of teaching, I came up with almost the same idea. The teacher must care about the students who don't like English, so the teacher should be good at motivating their students, and not only have knowledge of English. Therefore, teachers also have to know how to help students to enjoy English. So I recommend English teachers learn not only English grammar or accuracy of pronunciation, but also be more communicative and sociable.
