[TITLE] Is Japanese selfish?
I don't think Japanese are selfish because of their DNA. But also I cannot deny that I am selfish! At the same time, my friends say they don't think I have a Japanese backgraund. And I gave my sympathy when a disaster happened to other countries. Besides, I'm sorry to say this because I have some friends from these countries, but I think Americans and Chinese are kind of selfish people. I don't say all, but they don't stand in line and think only about themselves. One of my friends explained about this and she said it's because of their history. China was poor and always had to take things earlier than other people then it made them selfish. And America is a melting put of races, so they tried to be a top. I think DNA doesn't decide these things but our history and culture could make us selfish.

Thanks for the speech. I had a good moment to share the ideas and think if we Japanese are altruistic or selfish. It's very difficult to answer it!! I think Japanese seem to be altruistic, and we don't think that we don't want to help other people. In fact, as you mentioned, many Japanese don't have an interest to know how the situation abroad is, but it doesn't mean Japanese just think of ourselves. As the teachers mentioned Mother Theresa, I didn't think Japanese are poor in heart, even if it seems to be to foreigh people it's just a unique feature of Japan.

Why we don't donate to a country which has a disaster is because our gavernment has some steps for donation, I think. One thing I wondered about was why France had a question mark on the table. I thought France must have big altruism as a country. When my mother's friend was in Africa, there was a civil war where she was. The French government saved her life instead of the Japanese govenment. So I thought France is such an altruistic country.

I became very interested in the relationsip between genes and character. But I had one question that I wanted to ask. That is, how human beings acquired how to speak languages. I don't know if this question is related with today's theme, so next time I'll ask one like this.

[TITLE] The Awareness of "Humanity"
"We, Japanese are selfish?" This question was shocking and so difficult to answer for me. I think Japanese people are not selfish but just not interested in others. I thought Japanese people are imaginative but maybe it was partly wrong. We can't think of others' problems like ours. I'll try to exercise my imagination to be sympathetic to others.

He said Japanese people are selfish. I think it comes out sometimes. I think people who live in the countryside are more considerate than people who live in urban areas, because the former communicate with neighbors much more and they give their vegetables and foods and so on. People need thoughtfulness towards other people. Mutual help is important.

As Mr.Hiratsuka said, the power of imagination and symbolic and abstract things enable the modern humans to understand. It was the most impressive word for me. When I think "If...," my imagination runs. It is important for the modern children to imagine a lot of things around them.

"Altruism" is a difficult topic for me, because I am selfish rather than altruistic. Foreigners sometimes say that Japanese people are very kind. It may be true in part, but I don't think so. Old Japanese like my grandfather are stubborn. So it is hard for them to accept other people's opinion. But they worry about what other people think of them. Therefore, they make themselves polite. That's why Japanese people are not altruistic.

I guess the reason why Japanese people don't donate is that we don't have the custom of donating. We tend to do as others do, so it's difficult for individuals to donate. But I think Japanese people also sympathize with victims of tsunami, earthquake and so on. I know Japan has made a great contribution to the other countries as a unit.

I don't think Japanese are the poorest in kindness in the world. Also, I think we can't judge which nationality is the poorest. It depends on what personality we have, how we've grown up and so on. However, some Japanese don't care about unknown people because they tend to think that if someone needs help, they don't have to do it or other people will do it for them. It's not only Japanese characteristics. I don't want foreigners to think something like that.

I think this is one of the problems of Japanese media. When I watch the Japanese news, most of the news belongs to Japan and less of that belongs to foreign countries. That makes people feel like they are living just in Japan not on the earth. And, the second problem is that they don't know how to get the information of donation or maybe they don't even know there is such a thing.

I couldn't understand this class. I thought that I want to improve my English ability. Did he mean that Neanderthal men had more compassion than modern people? I think Japan knows fear of tsunami and earthquakes, so I want Japan to help other countries which had a disaster more positively.

I think Japanese people are not poor in heart. Our gentleness is difficult to understand and we have a tendency to hide our feelings. If Japan is a selfish country, I want to know what country is unselfish and affectionate. What I can agree with in this class was the fact that the ancient people were more unselfish than modern people.

I understand that ancient people were hunting and helping one another and we have taken over their genes so we are now taking care of one another. I agree that Japanese people are the poorest at expressing their mind. I think we Japanese people are too worried about what other people think, so we can't express our mind. Today's speech was so difficult that I couldn't understand much.

Today's class was very difficult to me and I couldn't understand well. I wanted the speaker to give us handouts to help understanding. I couldn't see the screen well. Until today, I didn't wonder if Japanese people are selfish. I think it depends on people and time. I always donate my blood and, every time I go to the blood donation center, I see many people joining to donate. People including me take an action by having thought how we can help people.

I don't think all of the Japanese can't express their feelings. Some Japanese can do very well and others don't like to do so. It can't be said unconditionally because it is the same as the fact that not all of the Americans like to express their feelings. If it is due to genes or origin, I cannot agree to that. I don't agree with the word of Mother Teresa, "Japan is the poorest nation." I always make a donation and contribution when I see fund-raising campaigns!
