Japanese people think they are not good at speaking English. So they use web-translator software although they also understand the software isn't perfect. But they use it because they don't make English sentences themselves. I think some Japanese people don't like English. But most of the Japanese people like to wear T-shirts with English words printed on it. Japanese people want to speak English well. But they don't know how to study English. So people should learn how to sudy English first, not its grammar.

In Japan, everything is overly categorized. And we don't think about the relationship between one another. In Japanese school, writing, reading, listening, speaking and vocabulary are taught in different classes. But I think each thing has relation and similar meanings. So, in each class they should teach the relation beyond the categories. And students should consider the relation and imagine a big picture.

It was a very exciting speech! I became very interested in "the Big Picture." I realized that I have had a small view about everything. I do think that Japan is moving away from the global community and many Japanese don't have English skills. It is a very sad thing. I love listening to music, so I would like to listen to English songs a lot and remember them without looking at the words.

[TITLE] To develop our English skills
I think Japanese people stick to some stereotypes about English or foreign people: for example, "Foreigners don't like natto." We should abolish these ways of thinking, and develop English skills. Otherwise, we can't communicate with foreigners anymore and Japanese will be left behind compared to foreign countries in various points such as economy, politics and so on.

[TITLE] To develop our English skills
Recently, Japanese people's knowledge is getting worse. On the contrary, Chinese and Korean people are getting smarter. I think this situation is bad for Japanese. Simultaneously, I'm ashamed of it. So, we have to study more like other Asian people. And then we'll have more confidence. When Japanese people meet foreigners, they are nervous because they think they can't speak English. But I don't think so. We spend more time to study English. Therefore, we might be able to speak English. In short, Japanese people need to have confidence and try hard studying many things.

At first, I was surprised that only one Japanese could enter Harvard University, and this figure is much lower than that of Chinese and Korean people. (They are from the same area, which is Asia.) Most of us have stereotypes for many things: for example, Mr. Barker said Japanese think foreigners eat bread for breakfast. We should abolish our stereotypes so we can see the world with a wide view. By the way, I'll remember not to ask foreigners "Do you like natto?"

I really realized the difference lying between me and foreigners. I often asked foreigners or teachers in junior high school: "Can you eat natto?"or "Do you like sushi?" This is the question to be asked only if they have Japanese mind. But today, I got to know it is making walls, so we have to refrain from it. Also today, I became more interested in studying English. We may have learned English for six years, but exactly most of us, including me, only have done it for less than one year. Nowadays, I think Japanese people don't hope to be rich, so we don't want to study like Koreans or Chinese. Lastly, today's speaker was so great because his speech was very funny!

Thank you for your speech. I got some clear idea on my question about why Japanese can't speak English. Things have various aspects, and we have to take away the stereotype as Japanese. We need to admit that we can't speak English not because Japan is an island! What we have to do is to develop our point of view and try to understand the differences in cultures.

I was surprised to know that it makes someone who are non-Japanese displeased for my saying to them, "You are good at speaking Japanese," "You can use chopsticks very well" and "Do you like fermented soybeans?" We say so because we want to break the wall between us. But ironically, the conversation makes the wall between us. In translating English into Japanese and Japanese into English, it is difficult to tell my feelings perfectly. But the more I study English, the more I can express my feelings in more appropriate English, so I continue to study English. Someday, I want to be an English speaker who can express detailed nuances.

What I thought the most interesting example was the Japanese custom of saying "Itadakimasu." Between Japan and other countries, the fact that there are many differences is sure, but maybe many Japanese don't feel strange for asking foreigners "How do you say ‘Itadakimasu' in your country?" But after Mr. Barker's speech, I realized that it's a bad question. I thought we may build walls between foreigners and us without noticing. When communicating with foreigners, we have to pay attention to the way. I found that this point is linked to the last week's speech in that giving pleasure to others is important.

Today's speech was a really interesting one and also I felt shocked because I knew the fact that Japan is moving away from Grobal communities. The People of the Japanese Government don't have "BIG PICTURES" at all and that's one of the reasons why the Japan is moving away, I think. I think most Japanese people are disappointed with the Government, but few people try to change the country. I hope Japan is going to become better, but I don't know how to make it better. I want to leave a bright future for children.

I could learn many things from today's lecture. I didn't know Korean and Chinese students study English much harder than Japanese. Now, I often do a hard part-time job. So, in fact, I wasn't studying English very hard. But, I thought I should study English hard too. And I like the Carpenters, so I think I will start listening to them repeatedly without looking at the words of the songs. I'm happy to listen David's lecture!

[TITLE] The BIG Picture
I work in a preparatory school. I was asked "why do we have to study English? We can't become an English speaker". Many Japanese study English and we must do that because it's a rule. But we don't become English speakers. What's the problem? Many Japanese think that our pronunciation is bad. Why? I think it's a consequence of kana. We are not in trouble in Japan even if we can't speak English. Is it true? When we are in junior high, high school and now in university, we must study English. And when we work, it's necessity. We should think about how we study languages and something else.

I was really impressed with Mr.Barker's presentation. I knew what is powerpoint really for (lol). Another thing is that as I listen to him, I realize that we have many things in common. First of all, Japanese is not my mother tongue. So, when I was starting to learn Japanese, I only had a few chances to use my dictionary because I couldn't rely on it, The next thing is "not to put a wall between one and another". Everyone individually differs from each other, so it is really true that we should not see someone as a group of something, instead, see him/her as an individual.

[TITLE] Japanese students in junior high or high school can't speak English?
In his presentation, he said that in junior high and high school, teachers mainly teach students grammar of English. In order to speak English, the way of studying English must be changed in Japan, For example, I teach English to some students in a private school. One of my students, who got a perfect prize, however, can't speak English face to face. So I think, there is something that we have to change.
