Until Today, I didn't know anything about AFS. So I was surprised that so many students from all over the world and many significant(famous people) have belonged to this program. I believe that AFS helps them a lot to make their dream come true by offering them lots of opportunities to explore the real world. And also, what was interesting is that some companies that have products related to foreign countiries, support these organizations, Also I agree that many Asian students study very hard to go abroad, especially to the US, and speak English pretty well compared to Japanese exchange students. I believe that going abroad helps us not just to brush up language skills, but also to obtain communication skills that are needed to survive this changing world.

I was surprised at so many diplomats are AFS returnees! These days, the number of the students who want to go and study abroad is decreasing. Actually I spect 3 years in the UK, and I think this experience gave me loads of ideas about living in a globalised world. I feel it's strange there are only Japanese(I know there're many Koreans, Chinese etc, though) in Japan nad all have black hair, speak Japanese and wear lovely clothes in trends. It's strange that out of fashion catches others' eyes in a big city. There should be various kinds of people there.

I want to study abroad to learn German.(maybe after the next year). I have to study German hard now but "non-verbal communication" is important, I think, gesture, smile, and so on. My friends who come from Germany try to understand me without correcting my German. We, Japanese, need more positive attitude about communication. "Silence is Gold" is not always good, I think.

I understand about AFS organization and I became interested. I agree that how to communicate with other people is very important, but I don't have confidence to talk with many people, and I'm not so flexible. I want to go abroad and talk with many foreigners in future, so I'll try to make myself have confidence. Do you have any idea how to make confidence to talk with many kinds of different people?

[TITLE] Studying Abroad
I wish I knew AFS when I was 15. I think it is a really interesting program. I was surprised because AFS was originally founded as a volunteer ambulance corps and served in WWT and WWU, even though it is making great effort to keep peace in this world now. Living abroad is so helpful to understand the way of thinking and valve in other countries. I totally agree that studying abroad gives us the chance to know a different culture, and while adjusting to the different culture we can get flexiblity. In fact thanks to my study and life in the US last year, I got the communication skills which Mr.Ohyama talked about.

[TITLE] My dream of studying abroad
I have wanted to study abroad someday for a long time. Today I could hear a valuable speech from Mr. Ohyama. If I go abroad, I can learn about not only language skills but also maturity, global responsibility and so on. Only by staying in Japan, we can’t learn about the situation of foreign countries nowadays. So, I want to go to other countries to fit into global society.

[TITLE] My dream of studying abroad
I had thought communication skill means only language. After today’s lecture, however, I noticed thinking all the time and being concerned about others’ feelings are important, too. As for AFS, I didn’t have any knowledge. But not only to improve English skill, but also to learn real communication skill, and to extend my own way of thinking, I want to use it. As one person in the world, I really want to meet many people all over the world.

I realized how important it is to acquire communication skill, not only language skill. I want to travel in Europe like he did someday, and I was glad to hear my senior’s speech. I have been to the US, but I want to experience still more lifestyles which are different. Finally, I prefer American lifestyle too, but it can be said as follows: the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

I’m very interested in AFS. I want to go abroad in the future, so I would like to receive their support. And I think AFS is an interactive company where foreign language skill can be used. I’ll try to search a job using English (or other language) from several angles.

I’m impressed very much by his word: “The most important thing to communicate with others is getting along. Language is not the most important.” I think so, too! I’m not a good English speaker, but I try to get skills to get along with others. I try to make friends with foreigners. That will extend my horizons.

Thank you for your interesting speech! I thought learning and using English is very important to communicate all over the world today; however, not only that, but also thinking, knowing or understanding how people live in the other places is necessary for us. Have you become depressed when you see a “real situation” where people live? I think you have a lot of chance to face hard situations in the world: for example, homeless, poverty, disease, poor education, environmental problems, and so on. People tend to avoid these kinds of “dark” situations. I want to know how you react when you face it. If I were you, it would be very hard to solve! As Ms. Miyaura mentioned, I’m very interested in being a host family. Are there many necessary conditions to be a host family? For example, many members of a family have to speak English or house should be near university, and so on. I’d like to know what I need to be a host family. Thank you for reading!

I had a great time to listen to his speech. I’m really impressed by his word that the most important communication skill is to make people happy. Certainly, if we can talk with foreigners smiling, we learn to do our best to master English because we want to communicate with them more and more. If I go abroad, I’ll try this behavior. Moreover, Mr. Ohyama said, “Recently, students are increasing who want to study abroad.” Actually, I’m one of them. I like to experience many kinds of things and know individual culture which each country has through studying abroad, volunteering and so on. I was glad to hear a great story from him.

Thank you for your speech. I’m really interested in what you do. You said AFS wants to promote peace. I do agree with it. I’ve been to Vietnam to teach disabled children English. And it was the first time for me to see those people. I was shocked and started thinking what we can do and what peace is. This summer I stayed in China for a month and during my stay in China, a big problem happened between China and Japan. I think of course everyone knows this. But actually it was nothing in China. Everyone was good to me. Therefore, I really feel sad when I saw the news which said about China so badly even if it was not real. I think we, young people, should go abroad and see the world. And I think language is just one of the ways to communicate. We should know their culture, history and more than language.

Money is always the problem to study abroad. If I study abroad, I want to go abroad at least a year. But even half a year to go abroad, it costs me more than 500,000 yen. I can’t afford it. And I have to be concerned about coming back to Japan. I’m worried about getting a job which I really want to do. I’m in a dilemma.

[TITLE] Title: How the communication skills help you ?
I’m interested in the theme: “How do we communicate with other people?” Sometimes I think that silence is gold, but when we want to talk with other countries’ people, we should say our opinion. “Silence is gold” is Japanese culture. I like this thought, but also, we shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes. And I think the most important thing is to ENJOY! When we want to do something, we may feel joy. Someday, I want to go to Spain, and I want to ENJOY my life!
