感想

I didn’t know about Switzerland culture, so today’s lecture was a great opportunity to learn it.  The most interesting point is there are many kinds of people who speak different languages, such as German, French, Italian and so on.  Besides, I was surprised that German which is spoken in Switzerland is different from the one spoken in Germany.  Japan is an island and we only speak Japanese, so I can’t imagine that Swiss people talk each other with German and French.  It’s amazing.

Today’s lecture was interesting and easy to understand.  I really enjoyed it.  I did not know that Switzerland is such a multicultural country.  My image of Switzerland was that it is famous for swatch and cheese.  But I knew many new things about Switzerland.  I was surprised to hear that it has four official languages and that English is not its official language.  I came to be interested in Switzerland.  I want to know Switzerland more and want to visit there someday.

I really enjoyed his interesting lecture.  I knew that Switzerland has 4 official languages.  But, I didn’t know Swiss’s mother tongue depended on their living place.  I am really surprised he can speak 5 languages, I think he learned them so hard.  After I listened to his lecture, I thought I should study English and Spanish so hard!  His lecture motivated me.

Since Japan is isolated geographically, the number of people coming from other countries are still not so large.  However, Japanese is also famous for having strong dialects in each regions.  Still the “standard” Japanese is Tokyo’s.  Of course we need the one common language to share across Japan.  However, Japan especially have a strong feeling on “Standard” than other countries.  In Switzerland, 4 languages are official and all the official languages are also welcome.  To respect each culture and do best to understand it is needed in Japan.

Today I listened to the lecture about Switzerland.  I was very interested in Switzerland.  I have not known that the official languages in Swiss are German, French, Romansh, Italian.  I was surprised that Swiss French students learn German or Italian first and English comes later at school.  I think it is great that most people in Swiss can have simple conversation in German/French.  I am studying French so I want to go to Switzerland and I want to talk with them in French.  I was also surprised perfect bilingual people speak both languages mixed together.  I want to speak French and English.

I was surprised to hear that Switzerland has four official languages.  One more thing that surprised me was public announcement.  It is in German so people have to read the sentence in German when they are not in the area of German.  I can’t imagine that I speak to a person who is from the same country in a foreign language.  Mr. Affolter also told us many differences among each area.  It was strange a little for me at first, but I remembered that we have many different cultures in Japan depending on areas(Tokai, Kansai, Kanto and so on).  I think it is important to know and understand other cultures(not only foreign culture but also inside of our country.

It was very interesting to listen to all the experiences he had with different languages.  He said that his language knowledge is limited, but he’s not afraid to use it.  From my experience of living in the U.S. for 5 years, I totally agree with him on this idea.  There still are many words and expressions that I don’t know.  However, I have an ability to ask what the other person meant.  I didn’t realize this until recently but when I did, it gave me so much confidence.  It was great to hear that from him.  It gave me even more confidence that I was in the right track.

It was a really interesting lecture that I could get to know about Switzerland’s society and its culture.  It’s unimaginable for me to use 4 different languages because even learning one language(I mention English) is very hard and stressful sometimes.  In Japan, the starting age of learning English is controversial since it could prevent children from acquiring accurate Japanese.  I think the case in Switzerland that children can speak different languages according to situations would be a strong counterargument to the opinion.

His English is so clear and it is easy to listen to his lecture.  I didn’t know Switzerland well before I took lecture today.  I was thinking that the official language of Switzerland is English, but it isn’t.  Moreover there are 4 official languages in Switzerland.  I have studied German as a second foreign language.  So I got to be interested in Switzerland.  Then I want to know what differences Swiss German and German are in detail.  At first I thought Gregory can speak 5 languages because there are many people who speak some languages.  But it is different and because there are many people who speak one language, I think.  Therefore I’ll get to speak English and other languages if I move myself and talk with native speakers more at school.  I decided to try my best.

I’m studying German now, so I had had an interest in today’s lecture before it began.  I was surprised to hear that Switzerland has a variety of languages more than I had expected.  Changing languages depending on situations is difficult, I think, but it may be interesting that people speak different languages in the same country.  The phrases “ My language knowledge is limited, but I am not afraid to use it.”  moved my mind.  I’m always afraid of speaking with people even in Japanese.  But I want to be an interpreter.  First, I want to be a woman who is active.
