I didn’t know so much about Finland because it is a long way between Japan and Finland.  However, there are some similar points, such as “University”.  In university in Finland, the students are free but everything is up to them.  It resembles to Japan’s university system.  I was surprised there is a military system in Finland.  On the whole, seeing and studying many countries, regardless of distance, is a very important thing.  I learned that from this lecture.

Listening to today’s lecture, I was ashamed that I only knew few cultures in Japan.  I did not know the hobbies that Mikko had at all.  Because I am Japanese, I thought I need to know more about Japanese culture, history and so on.  I lived in other countries for seven years, so I have not thought about studying abroad during my university life.  But today I thought a little bit about studying abroad.  That is because I like to communicate with many people, and I liked the pictures of Finland that were shown in today’s lecture.  It reminded me of my life abroad.  I hope I will think about studying abroad or going for a trip.

Thanks to today’s lecture, I want to study abroad more and more.  I thought it is very important to go abroad and study foreign countries.  Moreover I thought we can compare our own country and other countries when we get a lot of knowledge of foreign countries.  I learned that education in Finland is similar to education in Japan.  For example, starting school when they are 7 years old, elementary school for six years, junior high school for three years, next is three years….  I learned we can also find many good friends and find a hobby or interest when we go abroad.  I felt like studying abroad when I am attending this University.

At first, I was surprised to hear the temperature of Finland.  The temperature is minus twenty degrees in winter.  It’s too cold!  “Japan does not get any cooler during summer.” He said, I thought it’s true.  Next, I thought it is difficult to change studying and quit his job.  I found his life is wonderful.  He was interested in Japanese history.  I thought he knows a lot of things about Japan and his knowledge beyond my expectations.  It’s valuable for me to do what I want to.  Also, there is a big difference between Finland and Japan.  No tuition fees for University in Finland.  It was surprising.  But there are some similar points in education.  I thought difference of two countries.  I was interested in culture of Finland.  I want to learn about different cultures.

I’m really interested in living and going to University both in Japan and Finland.  I am surprised that there are lot of difference between Japanese and Finnish university.  I also experienced that Japanese furniture and doors are so small when I came back to Japan from the U.S.A.  I think Japanese students in University have two types of people.  One is students who have clear goals and study hard, and the other is students who don’t have clear goals and do part-time job harder than study.  I heard that the latter type of students are almost only in Japan, and foreign university students each have each clear goals.  So I think Japanese students should follow those students.  And I want to go to foreign university, someday, because I want to take an objective view of my country.

Your life is full of challenge!  I am surprised that you came to Japan with a very small vocabulary.  I thought if I study abroad, I must learn so many foreign words, but it is also important not to miss the chance to go.  When I heard the differences between University in Finland and Japan.  I felt a negative image about Japanese University.  Japanese out-of-date idea should be gotten rid of.  Education in Finland is interesting.  Strong Support for students is reassuring.  I learned that Finland is colder then I expected, but I am interested in life in Finland.  Someday I want to visit, but I am scared of your big big neighbor.

According to his speech, Japan is worse in many aspects then Finland.  Most of all, the education system in Japan is awful.  In spite of high value system on a school career, the government doesn’t provide students with economical supports.  As for me, I’m receiving a student loan for tuition fees.  He quit or absented universities for a couple of times, but it brought him a life-long profession at long last.  Japan should offer a system for students or workers to experience and try a lot of more things.  By the way, both Japanese and Finnish tend to respect and take care of nature.  I guess that’s why they are alike and Moomin is popular.

Since I wasn’t familiar with Finland very much, there were many things I didn’t know in the lecture and they were all interesting.  I was especially surprised how good and well managed education in Finland is.  It is obvious that each country has different needs and what is suitable for each of them, but I thought Finnish education is one of the best in the world.  I am now a university student and tend to look at world’s university education more than compulsory or secondary education.  However, listening to the lecture, I saw Finnish education for kids were also very good.  There were so many differences between Japanese and Finnish education and it was very fascinating for me.

Thank you so much for your presentation.  I was very surprised to hear that you can speak four languages, I can’t imagine what it is like to speak four languages, but I want to speak foreign languages well to communicate with many people.  You told us that it is important to learn foreign cultures to learn foreign languages, I think so too because it is necessary to understand other cultures or way of thinking to communicate with others.  If I know nothing about culture, thinking or the rule of the society, I might be rude to others or cause misunderstanding.  I was surprised to hear the difference between Finland and Japan because most of them was new things for me.  I want to learn not only language but also culture, etiquette, thinking and so on.

I don’t know Finland so much, but Moomin is a famous character in Finland.  So I feel affinity.  Moreover, education and work in Finland is better than Japan.  For example, no tuition fees help many poor students, because in Japan some students give up studying at university because they can’t pay fees.  For me, long holiday once a year is a good point.  Mr. Vilenius is interested in Japanese history and culture.  I am Japanese, but I’m not interested in it.  So I admire him and he know martial arts.  He know more Japanese culture than Japanese.  I want to learn Japanese culture, for foreign people might ask me about Japan.

Thank you for you presentation.  I have never been to Finland, so what I know about Finland is quite few.  During your speech, I realize that there are some differences between Japan and Finland in various points such as education and work.  “Japanese managing culture is more group-oriented” you said.  I think Japanese are apt to be shy in a group and to care about others extremely.  If Japan still closed the door to foreigners, the culture would remain stubbornly, so it’s important for people to know other countries (their cultures) and compare them with our own country (culture).  I’d like to be an international person.
