I do not read manga so much but I think it is difficult to translate it.  As I am Brazilian, sometimes I have to translate what the TV show is saying to my parents and I feel it very difficult.  Especially when it is Japanese jokes or when they are using terms that only exist in Japanese.  Just translating to my family is not a big responsibility but when the translation is for publishing manga in English, it must be very a very difficult task.

His lecture was very interesting for me!!  There are a lot of words which have the same meaning in English and Japanese.  I think it is so difficult to express the word which English doesn’t have, for example Kansaiben.  The import of a story can be determined by how you express.  I think a translator needs to know so many words.

I love Manga and Anime, so today’s lecture is fascinating for me.  Especially, I’m interested in the work of a translator and I have challenged to translate what I love a few times, but it has been really difficult for me.  From today’s lecture, I can get new information about the differences between Japanese culture and American one.  For example, a person doesn’t call himself by his own name.  It is interesting.

I had a great time!  I love Japanese MANGA, so I am really interested in today’s topic.  I am happy to hear a lot of episodes of translation.  I am surprised that SAILOR MOON made a big change in MANGA market, but, I am glad because this MANGA is one of my favorite MANGA.  Many people in the world know and enjoy MANGA these days.  I am proud of that.

Anime is one of the reasons I’d like to be engaged in English.  The technique in translation to make characters is one of the things that I wanted to ask someone all the time, I know that there’re many comics or video games translated by bad translators.  For example, one character who speaks Japanese and English in a jumble should be translated in such a way, even in English alone.  I’m impressed that he really loves the characters and does his best to make them as they are.

Thank you for your lecture.  I am really interested in “Manga” so I enjoyed this class very much.  What I am most surprised is that so many Japanese Mangas are translated into English (there are some which I do not know and my mother’s favorite).  Also I feel translating Manga is absolutely tough work because it needs not only translation but also research for background and understanding Japanese culture.  I would like to read and enjoy Manga you translated.  Thank you very much.

I fell translating Japanese comics is really tough work.  I can understand Kansaiben easily because I am Japanese,  but American can’t.  I think the dialogue is very important to make the comics funny or more exciting, so his work is very hard translating correctly from Japanese to English and letting Americans enjoy it.  I seldom read and watch anime, but today’s presentation is very interesting.

Thank you for your interesting lecture!  I like reading manga but I haven’t read them in English.  In English, “I” or “you” or “he” have to be written… on the other hand, in Japanese, they don’t have to be written.  So it is tough to translate in English, I think.  Moreover, there isn’t “Kansai-ben” in English, so we can read in English with new nuance.  I was very surprised that sports manga does not popular in the U.S!  I like it and I was sad!

It seems difficult to translate Japanese manga or anime to English because of big difference of their and anime’s peculiar speaker.  Your translation of “mottainai” and “mendokusai” is so perfect.  I think there are big cultural differences between Japan and America, but manga is loved by everyone.  It’s wonderful.  Though we sometimes watch anime translated by general people easily these days, that’s a problem.  The companies should take the copyright(right of translation) and control more.

When I was born, there had already been many comics or animes around me.  I grew in such a situation and learned many things which is important for our life.  Then I am glad to know that foreigners understand the messages that manga have.  Today I also know the difficulty in translating Japanese into English or other languages.  Because Japanese has a lot of unclear or indirect expressions which is difficult for Western people to understand.  For example, dialects and effective sounds.  So this lecture told me difficulties communicating which foreigners again.
