TITLE

I studied classical Japanese literature when I was a high school student. But I'm not interested in them so much. So I was surprised that many people in the U.S. want to learn Japanese, classical Japanese literature, Japanese culture and so on. In addition, I felt strange to be taught classical Japanese things by a foreigner. I want to be good teller about Japanese modern and classical culture so that I can introduce them to foreigners.

I'm very happy to hear her presentation. Her English is good for me to understand and I think I could catch almost 90% of what she said. I'm very surprised she studies classical Japanese hard because I have no interested in it. I think it's very hard for foreigners to study Japanese so I respect her because she challenges and tells us the charm of Japanese. I want to study abroad but I don't have confidence to do it. But today's presentation encouraged me and I really thought I want to study more. Thank you very much.

Her speaking was so clear that I could understand the content. I watch the TV program "Trad Jpan" at NHK, and I'm interested in expressing Japanese culture in English. Then I could have a worthy experience directly. I'm happy to know that foreign people love and learn about Japan. Considering Japanese people have trouble learning traditional Japanese culture, it's great she learned it. I wish she made a dictionary of ancient Japanese words to English words.

TITLE : The Japanese classics from the view of "English"

I was pretty enjoying her talk, and impressed with her smile. I felt a lot of appreciation to her for her loving Japanese culture, as one of Japanese. I've never paid special attention to Japanese classics from the view of English, since I love English classics such as Shakespeare…BUT, her talk made me interested in Japanese classical world. Maybe I can try to read an English version of the Tale of Genji, for studying English. And I might be able to try to make a dictionary of classical Japanese to English. Anyway it was so much fun to hear English talk about "Japanese classics"

I'm glad to hear that young American people interested in Japanese culture. But I don't know my country's culture so much. I think it is a shame, so I want to study Japanese culture and explain it to foreign people in English. I think Japanese culture, especially literature, is a very beautiful culture. So we should be proud of my country's culture. The more stories I listened to, the deeper I am interested in Japanese literature.

Thank you for a very fresh and enlightening talk today. For me, it was great to hear about Japanese literature form a perspective apart from a Japanese person. When Japanese people do study a certain Japanese culture deeply, they already take into account everyday intriguing things which may be within the subject. Joannah first talked about toilet and gestures which are a daily amazement only foreigners world be able to perceive. Joannah then talked about the feeling and emotions of the characters within "Genji" which seemed to intrigue her particularly. This was a fresh insight into classical Japanese literature.

I think most Japanese students are not interested in Japanese classic literature because these are very difficult to understand. For foreign people, it's far more difficult to read and understand. I'm impressed with Ms. Peterson's challenge and I'm embarrassed about my less knowledge of Japanese classical literature. I think it's important that we find attractiveness of our own culture being taught by foreign people. And I'm interested in English translation of Haiku. Differences of each translator's sentence are so interesting.

Even for Japanese it is difficult to study classical Japanese literature, so I really respect Ms. Peterson. She spoke clearly and used easy words for us and I could understand almost all what she told us. I enjoyed today's lecture. I think to study classical literature is good to know the tradition and culture of the country. I think it is difficult to translate classical Japanese to English, especially Haiku, because it is original feeling of Japanese. I was impressed by Ms. Peterson's challenge!!

Today's presentation is so interesting. I learn the strange points of Japan viewed from other cultures' standpoint. When classical Japanese is translated into English, the nuance of words are completely changed. I was so surprised. I'm a Japanese, but I feel classical Japanese is difficult. However, I like reading these stories, so I feel happy that foreigners are interested in Japanese culture. Her efforts are great. I want to read other countries' literature too.

First of all, it felt kind of odd to learn about my own country's literature from a person who is NOT Japanese, but in a very good way. It felt fresh and as if I learned about classical Japanese literature for the first time!! The explanations and the hidden messages in the "emaki" was the most interesting to me. I've seen many pictures like those in the textbooks I used in high school, but I had never really focused on them. So by listening to this lecture, I got a better and deeper understanding of the literature I learned about in the past, of course, and it made me look and think about these precious portions of Japanese culture from a different point of view. Thank you so much for coming all this way to our school!! It became a very special experience for me!!!! I'd love to read the Geni Monogatari in the library someday.

When I was a high school student, I learned classical Japanese and read some works but I couldn't enjoy because I did just for passing the tests. Of course I found some stories were interesting, but it was too hard to read to the end of them. There are many Japanese who don't like classical Japanese, including me. I hope I could enjoy them as well as popular novels.

Today I'm surprised at the number of the people in the USA who enroll in Japanese class and study Japanese. Until I listen to your speech, I thought that students in the USA study Chinese more than Japanese so I'm very glad to hear that. And, I'm not good at studying Japanese history and classical Japanese, but when I listened to your speaking, I thought that I must study them. So I want to read and study classical Japanese as much as I can. In addition to , I study Spanish so I would like to study not only language but also history, culture and so on. Thank you for coming and nice speaking.

It was such an exciting lecture! I was impressed by Ms. Peterson's enthusiasm for Japanese classics. It is said that Japanese is very difficult for foreigners, Japanese classics must be really hard for them till more. She is super. What she was surprised in Japan was so interesting. I've never thought of such things but she is correct, I think. I want to study Japan harder like her. Thank you for a wonderful lecture!

Even for us, the Japanese classical literature is very hard to understand. Classical Japanese is already difficult and sometimes we need to understand the spiritual things, cultures and so on. There's also some special rhythm that we can't translate in any other language. It's so special that many American students are interested in Japan. When I see someone who knows the Japanese better than me, I'm always so ashamed. When I lived in France, I was the only one Japanese student in my school. So many students asked me about Japan. I didn't know much about Japan, I searched many things to explain them. I'd like to continue.

I was so surprised that classical Japanese literature is leaned by many American students and also Japanese is the most popular language to learn among Asian languages(Korean and Chinese). I can guess the reason why our language is popular because we've been related to the U.S. I like classical Japanese literature, especially the Tales of Genji like Ms. Peterson and I'd thought that foreigners couldn't understand the beauty of classical Japanese literatures. But in fact, that was wrong. Ms. Peterson knows it better than most Japanese people. And I think that it makes us understand the difference of each culture. We can be connected more with each other in the near future, I hope.
