TITLE

Is that our culture? Oh, I am sorry, I have never heard of it…
I didn't even know what Rural Kabuki is and I realized that I don't know so much about our culture. I think, If I went to study abroad, it would be really embarrassing to know not much about our culture. And we can't understand mutually if we don't know our culture, I think. I am a student in the department of international cultural studies and I want to study about cultures of different countries next year. But I don't know about our culture. I should have studied it… I thought I have to start studying about our culture before I study about other cultures.

I'm very impressed by him because he knows a lot of things about Japanese culture, Kabuki. But at the same time, I am ashamed of my ignorance about Japanese culture. When I went to England for studying, my host family sometimes asked me about Japanese history, but I couldn't answer some questions. I was very embarrassed. I love Japan, but I can't say I love Japan with confidence now because there are too many things that I don't know. I have to know more about Japan.

TITLE : Mutual Understanding

What I am interested in today was “Mutual Understanding.” Why must we have mutual understanding with other people? The answer is only one, I think it is to enable people in the world to live together. There are many different people with different colors of skin, culture and etc. Because of them discrimination occurred, wars happened, people killed each other. If we all people world really understand the meaning of mutual understanding, big world wars like what happened long time ago will never happen. At last war has been ended and it is nothing to worry about it again. But we still have a duty. It is to tell and teach the real meaning of mutual understanding to the next generation.

It was a very interesting story! I'm not interested in Kabuki or Japanese culture, so it was fresh that I could know about Japanese culture. After his lecture, I thought that travel is different from living in other country. Certainly travelers also know about other culture, but it's superficial knowledge. I think travel is a first step to understand each other, but if someone wants to know deeper, they should live for 6 months at least. Then they experience good and bad situations of the culture.

I understand that some people are really interested in some other culture, like Mr. Kushell, and I think it's a really good opportunity to get to know about the country, too. I don't know anything about Kabuki even though I'm Japanese, but I think a lot of people in the world are like me. Even people have really good culture in their country, they barely notice how awesome they are. For Japanese, especially, even though there are surprisingly many kinds of own culture in Japan, we don't know about them because we are not interested in them. I think we are wasting the chances to know about our own culture and even our own country, Japan. I know that it's really important to know about our own country when we go abroad, because people in the world are interested in Japan. It was pretty embarrassing not to be able to tell them about my own country when I went to the US. Mr. Kushell mentioned us about the importance of courage, too. I think it's really important to have courage to get a chance, too. I want to be brave and get a chance, and make my world wider.

Today “カリフォルニ屋” came to our university to talk about his research about “Kabuki.” It was the first time I saw a foreigner interested that much in Kabuki. He also participated in a Kabuki play once and had very long lines. I am a foreigner, too. Was impressed. He told us how important mutual understanding is and kept saying I phrases starting with “What if I --------- ”. What made me think about my life today. What if I didn't come to Japan? What if I haven't entered APU? I heard his experiences in Japan and remembered myself when I arrived in Japan. I couldn't eat anything and didn't know anybody. But as time passed, I felt more and more in love with this beautiful country.

TITLE : Rural KABUKI and Mutual understanding

I haven't ever seen Kabuki. But my grandmother like it, and my mother is interested in it. When I was in Junior high, I learned and saw a video of “Heike Monogatari” in my music class. It was so difficult to grasp the story. I have to study Kabuki before I watch it. It I don't do so, I can't understand. Kabuki is Japan's traditional culture. So I want to know as a Japanese. In Japan, Ichikawa Ebizo is a very popular person as an actor on TV. But sadly most young people haven't seen his kabuki in the theater.

Thank you for giving an interesting lecture to us. Today I learned about the Fulbright program and Rural Kabuki. If I could be an Exchange Student for one year, I'd like to study UK rock music in Britain because I like listening to it. Through today's lecture I learned about Rural Kabuki. I had thought Kabuki was equal to Professional Kabuki and hadn't heard about the Rural Kabuki. Today when I saw both of the performances, I noticed that Rural Kabuki was quite different from the professional.

Thank you for your lecture. I live in Mizunami in Gifu. I know there are performing arts peculiar to a locality like Kabuki, but I don't know the details. We have to know our culture. I want to know. I want to go to France to study French. But I want to learn not only language but also culture and history. I want to try something without heing afraid and enjoy my life in France.

A great speaker and a great topic. His explanation about Japanese culture and Kabuki was excellent. I think he knows more than Japanese people. And this is the first time I saw an American performing Kabuki with Geta and Kabuki costume. It was great acting. He shared his experiences, culture shock, and how he grew as a person, as a foreign student in Japan. I know actually how he feels living abroad and having different experiences can teach you more about life and make you a strong person.

I feel a bit of strangeness because I was explained about Japanese traditional culture by an American person. But I think people are attracted to something different which is completely unfamiliar. So foreign people get interested in Japanese culture like Japanese people get interested in America or European things. However, I thought, including me, we, Japanese need to learn traditional things about our culture and I want to be a person who can explain it in English.

Thank you for your lecture. I really enjoyed your story. Actually, I don't know and am not interested in Kabuki. However, because you looked really happy when you talked about Kabuki, I got to be interested in it. You made me feel like watching kabuki, especially ji-Kabuki. As one of the Japanese, I think I need to watch real Kabuki directly and want to feel Japanese culture! I love and am attracted to American culture! But I always feel that I need to know Japanese culture more when I talk to American people because they usually know Japan more than me and I always feel embarrassed. So, today's lecture was very useful to me and I really enjoyed it. Thank you!

I am very happy today to be here and listen to Michael's speech. Because I also have been abroad to study, I understood completely that taking a chance and absorbing new culture in foreign countries was a wonderful thing to do. I am very impressed by how much he loves Japan and how he shows this passion, by researching Kabuki.
I was thinking of studying abroad again this spring, and I think I made up my mind to make my idea a reality. I was motivated and encouraged a lot today. Thank you very much.

The person who has got interested in Kabuki is new to me. I think it's rare. Even Japanese aren't interested. When I saw the movie I was surprised. He played a really good role on the stage. He spoke just like JAPANESE I think he performed better than any other Japanese do. By watching his performance, I could understand how he likes it. It's a great thing. Not many people can do that.
