TITLE

I didn't know so much about Frank Lloyd Wright, but I think I learned a lot about him through this lecture. Japanese art is often admired by foreigners since long time ago, and it seems like foreigners can see the true appeal of Japanese art more than Japanese people can do. I think that's because foreigners can see a lot of differences between Japanese work and foreign work. Japanese people take everything including the beauty of the four seasons for granted, and it's hard to notice how beautiful and awesome Japan is. I know Japan is a beautiful country, and I appreciate that I'm living in this beautiful country. All the buildings he made are so cool. I liked the building with waterfall especially. I feel confident about my own country's culture to hear the story that some parts of the buildings he made has some kind of Japanese features!

It was very interesting to see Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, as they are very different from what buildings are supposed to look like. But I also had a feeling of familiarity because the inspiration to make the architecture is based on nature. So I think I felt a kind of warmth in his buildings, which is a similar feeling that people have when they are in nature.

TITLE:Frank Lloyd Wright and Japan:An Appreciation

I was surprised that Wright went on a trip to Japan as his first overseas trip. Japanese traditional architecture had a great influence on his life and I'm glad to here that. I think we Japanese should be proud of our own traditional, beautiful arts more and more.

I was surprised there was a foreign person who loved Japanese ukiyo-e. I know another person who loved and was influenced by ukiyo-e, Van Gogh. When I went to his exhibition, some ukiyo-e prints were there, which he collected. I am very happy that there are foreign people who love Japan or Japanese culture, but at the same time, I am a little ashamed of myself because I know about them less than foreign people. I want to know more about Japan and introduce them to foreign people who do not know its wonderfulness.

Today, we have many slides and descriptions from Mr. Laurence Dryden. I really enjoyed his lecture, at the same time I really tried hard to catch up with his talking! I have visited Hiroshige Art Museum in my home town. I learned a lot there and was interested in ukiyo-e much more. As Mr. Laurence Dryden said, there are many buildings Frank Lloyd Wright built. So I will probably remember today's lecture and Frank Lloyd Wright when I visit those places. Thanks for your lecture.

TITLE

I did not know about Frank Lloyd Wright at all. He designed some of the finest buildings of the 20th century. He was influenced by many things. In his early days, he learned from his mother, English Arts, Walt-Whitman and so on. The fact that he was influenced by Japan is a big surprise. Before 1905, he was interested in Japonisme, Japanese Homes and their surroundings, especially, ukiyo-e and the integration of these “influences” into “Prairie Style.” I thought he really loved nature. This is evidenced by his words: “I believe in God. Only I spell it Nature.” He first visited Japan in 1905. He travelled around Japan and saw many temples. As a result, it is said that his designs were influenced by Japan. The buildings designed by him were so nice, I would like to see the true ones someday.

Manifestation of god is nature. At first, I was surprised at Frank's architecture. What creative structures, I think. I was also astonished that his buildings were based on nature and Japanese culture!! Ukiyoe shows nature clearly, I know. Still, I don't know about Japanese pictures, architecture and other cultural things. Young Japanese tend to be interested in cute European structures and cool American goods. However, today I learned that some foreign cultures were influenced by Japanese culture, including Frank's structures. I felt those buildings are very beautiful. Surprisingly, I noticed that Japanese pictures and buildings are attractive enough. I realized at length, I'm proud that Japanese culture influenced foreign culture. Then I have to know more about Japanese good culture.

Since this lecture started, today's lecture is the longest one!! I felt his passion for telling us about Frank Lloyd Wright and Japanese constructions. When I was a high school student, I learned about Fenollosa in Japanese history's class and learned about “ukiyo-e” from my teacher. Listening to his speech, I remembered my high school days. Thank you for your passionate lecture!!

One of my teachers always recommends that we should visit museums and enjoy arts. However, to be honest, I'm not interested in arts because I don't know how to enjoy them. Despite this fact, I felt really curious about Ukiyoe and the buildings that Wright designed after today's lecture. I could know how Wright made his arts and what have a great influence on his creativity through the lecture, so my interests in the arts is growing.

I didn't know who Frank Lloyd Wright was but I'm interested in him now. The buildings he designed look like ordinary Western buildings. However, when we look at them very carefully, we can find that some parts of the buildings are based on Japanese buildings.
It is very interesting to me, and also I'm proud of Japanese culture.
