TITLE

Today's lecture is one of the most exciting ones for me, because I'm really interested in China and Chinese. (Actually, I have studied Chinese for two years as a second language.) I don't know why her English was easy to hear for me. I did job hunting this year and many times I heard the word “BRICs” and I realized again China has grown rapidly these days. China and Japan are close countries, but there are lots of differences between the two countries. China has grown rapidly and has a much bigger population. The biggest difference is effort and enthusiasm for English study. I was really depressed to know that although Japanese have a nice environment and many opportunities, we don't try to challenge. In contrast, Chinese try harder. I have to study harder and harder!!

It was quite interesting for me to hear about Chinese English education. I found it is different from the Japanese one. I think the Chinese one is better than the Japanese one. Her English pronunciation is so clear and she speaks very well. I wonder if this is because of the Chinese characteristics of English education where they learn English phonetics. And also they are taught a kind of policy for like “Try, try, Don't be shy” and so on, which is a very effective way to get to speak English. I think that's wonderful!! It was a very interesting lecture:)

I'm interested in “The Great Buddha of Leshan”. I'm learning Buddhism art in my class, but I have never seen its Buddha. I'm surprised, it's so big, so tall. I wanted to think, to see The Great Buddha of Leshan. And, I have a friend who comes from China. These days, we talked about China's history (especially about war) and the one-child policy. I thought about talking about these things again, based on this class. “Language learning is life-long” English is very hard for me, but I want to keep on studying.

My major is Chinese so today I was really happy to hear this lecture. Japanese were told that they were diligent people from a long time ago but I think it's not true. In the lecture, Japanese seem to have more opportunities to learn English than China. However, it seems that they waste opportunities. As a result, the TOEFL scores of Japan and China have a ten points gap. I thought she's a great person because I have never had an idea to study English in Japan. She didn't come abroad to gain language but to research.

Song Wei, originally from China, came to talk with us today about differences between China and Japan. She also talked about her home town, Sichuan. There are many pandas, “The Great Buddha of Leshan” (71m high), Jiuzhaigou valley, etc. She told us about GDP growth rates, and about big differences between China & Japan. For example, there's just ONE party in China, the communist party. The other thing is the “One-Child Policy”, a policy that says Chinese couples are allowed to have just one child. In China, only elites have the chance to take TOEFL, different from Japan, so I think we're very lucky:)! I was very happy for being able to read some words in Chinese, and it was a great lecture!

In the 21st century, China has become a big product country. Chinese GDP exceeded Japan's. I worry about the great number of Chinese poor. I was surprised that many Chinese know about Kawabata Yasunari. Why? The TOEFL scores of Japan are worse than China. Japanese are not good at speaking English. Japanese should make more contact with English. Japanese mustn't use Japanese in English classes. Japan should make the English world in our country. And Japanese children and adults should speak English more fluently than in the present circumstances. No translation TV programs, using English-to-English dictionary, using a synonym dictionary, and try, try, don't be shy. These points make us a master of English, and a positive speaker.

I got interested in characteristics of English education in China. The idea of pronunciation chart would be useful for beginners of studying English. I didn't know the fact that in China only elites have the chance to take TOEFL. I was a little sad because there are more gap between the rich and the poor in China than in Japan.

It was easy to understand her English pronunciation for me. I want to speak English like her. English education begins 1st grade at elementary school in China, which is different from Japan, and it attaches importance to speaking. I think Japan should teach English like China because I cannot speak in English well. She taught me many maxims in foreign language study. These maxims are very important for me. I never forget these maxims. I am happy to listen to her speech. Her speech affected me about studying English.

Her English was easy to understand. I wish I could speak like her. In the presentation, she talked about the TOEFL score and Japanese people's speaking test score was lowest in the world, so I should improve speaking skill. I'll keep the maxim in mind that “English is just a tool, not a goal”, and “Pain past is pleasure.”

Thanks for your great lecture. Actually I have taken your lecture two years ago. I listened to it really curiously again. When I went to Nanjing, China to study Chinese, I went on a trip around Sichuan district. Today's introduction of your hometown reminds me of good memories of the trip. To tell the truth, I've been to Leshan and had great time there! Finally, I am surprised at and was encouraged by your fluent speaking in English this time again. I also feel strongly that the education of Phonetics in early grade is important from my experience of studying Chinese in this university.
