TITLE

Today, Mr. Shetty, originally from India, talked a lot about India. I didn’t know that there are 325 languages and 1652 dialects. India was colonized by Britain, and is one of the largest English speaking countries (that don't have English as their first language). The Indian population is 1.2 billion people, the literacy rate 74%, so just 3/4 of the population can read and write. The sport of number one is cricket, and the major companies are the famous IBM and Microsoft. Some Indian movies are made in English, but the majority is made in Hindi, because it’s Indian’s official language. My mother and I love to listen to Indian music and Hollywood movies, so it was interesting to have a lecture made by an Indian, in English. With no native speakers, we can realize that English is a very important communication tool.

It was a really good opportunity to hear this lecture. As non-native speaker like him, I’m interested in Indian educational system of English. English plays an important role at business in India and they use it in real life. I actually felt that it's a big difference between India and Japan. There are a lot of things that we all Japanese should learn and follow. I was also surprised there are so many languages which are spoken in India. Through this lecture, I learn the importance of English and it removes our language barriers.

TITLE:Importance of English

Today, I couldn’t hear what Shetty is saying very well. I was very shocked but at the same time, I was very impressed. How can he speak English so well even though English is the second language for him. In addition, not only English but also he can speak a lot of other languages! I think it’s because of the education system (of course, because of Mr. Shetty’s effort!). I think the education system has made India one of the big developing countries. We Japanese should follow India and have to develop our companies more! Thank you for your great presentation!

I learned that English is the only official language in India, but I think it’s still awesome to be a multilingual person like Mr. Shetty. It was so surprising that he speaks in different language when he talks with his parents and when he talks with his friends. I also learned how important to be able to understand English nowadays. We have very few opportunities to use English or other languages in Japan, so I thought I should make effort to have more opportunities to use English. I think it would be so great to live in the countries like India, which has so many languages and has so many opportunities to learn English in a natural way.

TITLE:India has several languages

I was surprised that India has 18 major languages and more 300 local languages. I understood that local languages make it much easier for us to make friends in India. Major languages seemed to be official languages. I will also study English more. Mr. Shetty made a very interesting speech, I know. But, it’s different and fast for me to understand. Still, he told me that English is a key to expand our view. When we use English as a tool to know something, we can get much knowledge. Now, the world is full of English.

I listened to English of an Indian for the first time and it was so hard for me to understand. I was surprised that he can speak 5 languages. One of them, Kannada letters are very difficult but interesting. English is a good communication tool and we can make a lot of friends all over the world through it, so I will continue to study English.

Thank you for your today’s lecture. I have once read a book about India. Then, I was very surprised many local languages Indians speak. In addition, they also speak English in public. I understood that they need to speak English because of this diversity of their languages. I really envy them not only this fact, but also the fact that they are really good at mathematics. I was interested in the difference of English accents among local areas. I was also interested in the letters you wrote on the whiteboard. I think its move is similar to Tongpa letters used in the inner area of China.

Thank you for giving an interesting lecture to us. I learned about India a lot. Especially I was surprised how many official languages there are and that Indian people use many languages depending on some occasions. I think India considers English education as being much more important than Japan does. In India, being able to speak English has a great influence on the impressions from other people and the chances of employment, I learned. Indian people have many more opportunities of speaking English than Japanese people. So I think we must obtain such opportunities to improve our speaking skill in English.

I understand the look of India have changed through globalization. The Indian’s traditional clothes and decorations have been replaced by commonly-worn clothes (for example, UNIQLO). And there are Kentucky Fried Chicken shops in the picture. In India, there are many people who can speak English. I think the reason is the trading relationship between India and England. So naturally, a lot of people in India come to learn English. Besides, young people in India think “Speaking English is cool.” I learned that India has advantages of English through this class. So I think Japan has to follow India and consider learning English well to be active in the world.

I don’t know that India is one of the largest English speaking countries in the world. There are many more movies in India than Hollywood, but I haven’t watched an Indian movie. I want to know the different points of cricket from baseball. I was surprised about only using English at Indian universities. In Japan, students depend on using Japanese language in English class. It’s waste of time. The number of languages in India amazed me. Learning English is helpful to me, because I can get general and broadened knowledge, travel abroad easily, when I get a job, it helps me, and I can make international friendships, and so on.

Today, I took the lecture of Shakthi, who is from India. He told us about many aspects of India. For example, the No.1 sport in India is Cricket, the favorite pastime of India is watching movies… When I heard that the literacy rate in India is 74%, I was surprised because it is over my expectation. My thought about India has changed, and I can know about India thanks to him. But I can’t hear his English completely, so I think I’ll try to improve my English skill.

I associate India with only curry, nan and a very large population. I don’t know the details of India, for example the diversity, the strength of cricket especially the very large population of English-speaking people. I am surprised at this thing and I deeply think English is very important in international business over again. And I’m decided to improve my English skill because my English is very very poor now. Of course it is often said that English is not an end but a means. I think so too, so I want to get more knowledge in every field and to become an interesting person.

Shakthi says knowing local languages helps in developing better personal relationship. I agree with this opinion because we could feel comfortable if we speak the same dialect. When I talk to one of my friends who is from Okayama, I speak Okayama dialect. Then we became good friends but before then we were reserved. As knowing local languages helps in developing better personal relationship. When I went to Canada, I could make up so many friends there because I spoke English.

At first, it was hard for me to understand what he talked about. He spoke “Indian” English and he spoke so fast. However, at the same time I noticed that I also speak “Japanese” English. Through this lesson I really feel that India and Indian have an essential possibility to be a big country, because India is 9 times as big as Japan, and has 9 times the population of Japan. Moreover, India has lots of working population (20s~40s) and now India is the second economic growing country (behind China). One of the most important points of economic growth in India is English. Speaking good English makes a good impression and we have more chances to get a job. In fact, today’s guest speaker can speak 4 languages apart from English and he got a chance to work for TOYOTA. That’s why I really believe that language makes our lives rich. They have more opportunities to study abroad thanks to their English skill. Thanks to this lesson I could refind the importance of English and got interested in India and Indian culture.

It was very interesting to listen to his talk and also, to see how Indian people speak, present and express themselves as I think it is very different from Japan and English people. I think Japan is a unique country because we have only one language. Today I realized I should learn more and more languages, then I can get wide knowledge and broaden my horizons. I thought learning English and German was enough but as India has more than 300 languages, I might challenge some new languages and would like to see another new side of the world.
