TITLE

In this class, I learned about kidding in the world from Robert Juppe. Japanese can understand Japanese jokes but foreign people can't understand our jokes. And even though foreigners can understand their own jokes, we can't understand their jokes. But, I think a joke has potential power as a communication tool. So even though I can't understand American, British or European jokes, I'll fight to understand these jokes. I really want to use world-wide jokes! And I want to know other kinds of world jokes much more!

Even though American jokes are difficult for me to understand, I enjoyed Mr. Juppe's presentation very much. I learned American jokes are very different from Japanese ones in that we sometimes need background information such as history or culture to understand American ones. Also they sometimes are satire on something like politics. There are a lot of black jokes in America and many of them symbolize or compare something. That is interesting.

Thank you for your lecture about "Understanding Western Humor". I think understanding Jokes in other languages is at a higher level of linguish comprehension which must be done by knowing about the backgrounds, words, culture and history of other countries. For me, it seems that Japanese jokes do not need those backgrounds but rather use playing with words. What do you think is the biggest difference between Western and Japanese (or Asian) humor?

I had an idea. I mean, American jokes are for only Americans, so Japanese can't understand them. In fact, I have watched many jokes on TV, in books or something. However they are difficult and are not interesting to me. Today's class changed my mind. American jokes are interesting for us. I want to study them. Thank you.

In Japan, jokes are not so popular among young people, but I know that in many other countries people use jokes as one of the important ways to communicate with friends or make people laugh. Learning about jokes will be really good practice of the language and it's even going to be a great opportunity to learn about the cultures. All the jokes we learned today were also funny and interesting. We can understand jokes not only with the knowledge of language, but also with the knowledge of cultures. I hope I can understand the jokes which local people make next time when I visit my host family in the USA.

TITLE:Understanding Western Humor

When I was in Canada, I sometimes went to church on Sunday. The church was big and there were many Canadians. The priest usually made a speech and made a lot of jokes in that. However, I usually didn't understand why the Canadians in the church were laughing and felt sad. So today, I'm happy to know how to enjoy Western Humor. I want to go to that church and listen to his story again and laugh together as the Canadian do. Thank you, Mr. Juppe. I had a very good time and wanted to eat your delicious cookies. ;P

Today, Mr. Juppe, originally from New Jersey, came to talk about jokes. He told us many things about his life and made many jokes about this; for example, his favorite food: yakineko (fried cat) –e +i –o +u. I liked one about Mr. Mori, who went to meet Bill Clinton and talked with him. But, instead of saying "How are you?", he asked "Who are you?" then Bill Clinton replied "I'm Hillary's husband" and then Mr. Mori said "Me too." It was very interesting to listen to American jokes, and I would like to say thanks to Mr. Juppe for coming from Ibaraki.

The American joke is difficult for me. I need a lot of knowledge about history, political problems and grammar. Without them, I wouldn't understand jokes. So, I think if I come to be able to understand jokes, my English ability makes remarkable progress. I'll be able to use jokes.

Thank you for your presentation. I enjoyed many jokes very much. I felt American joke(western humor) and Japanese joke, so-called "dajere", is different before, but I understand American joke is also fun for me even though there are some different nuances between English and Japanese. Thanks to your presentation. I want to know more western humor. Thank you.

It's a very interesting lecture. Unfortunately I couldn't understand almost all jokes. But it's very interesting and I thought some of them were ironical. When I studied in Germany, sometimes I heard about german politics. Sometimes they said jokes, but I couldn't understand. I think German jokes are very ironical, so I want to study them.

Today's seminar is about "jokes". Teacher (Robert Juppe) gave very very fantastic class. So I enjoyed it very much. For example, he drew some pictures with "Dajyare". At first, I didn't have any idea. But he gave us some hints. So I understood his "Dajyare" at last. However I still think American jokes are difficult. I will try to study English more and I would like to understand foreigners and their mind of jokes.

TITLE:The American Jokes

I got very interested in jokes, thanks to this class. The jokes in this class made me very happy. In addition, I understood that I had to know the background of the country, such as culture, government, and history so as to understand some jokes. So, I felt motivated to study the culture, government, and history of a lot of countries as well as languages.

I did not know that there are so many jokes and the jokes exist in many counties. And I have never thought that Oyaji Gyagu is Japanese joke! Actually I don't like Oyaji Gyagu, but today I realized jokes use our brain, make people happy and also make me smart. Jokes will be able to be training of grammar! I want to use them, and want to make people laugh.

I'm very happy to be here and listen to Robert's nice presentation today. I think one of the difficult things to learn and understand foreign languages is jokes, as we have different sense of humor in each country. But with Robert's nice and funny talk, I could understand and see how Americans think of things in an interesting way. I laughed a lot and enjoyed this lesson very much. Thank you very much.
